School Bus Driver

JOB GOAL: Provide safe and timely transportation to and from school, and school-sponsored events.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Valid Illinois Commercial Driver’s License Class B with passenger endorsement and Illinois School Bus Driver’s Permit.
  • Willingly submit to Random Drug and Alcohol Testing.
  • Pre-placement Medical Exam, including tuberculosis clearance.
  • Pass a Regional Office of Education Fingerprint/Background clearance including Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  • Capable of communication and associating with children in a manner which fosters mutual respect.
  • Strong student management skills while working with large groups of children.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Monitor and support District 70-C, Transportation Department, State of Illinois and Federal regulations, policies, and laws concerning students, personnel, vehicles and transportation. Observe all rules of the road and adhere to posted speed limits.
  • Maintain control of students and report behavior concerns to school officials.
  • Promotes and supports the highest standards of safety for students and vehicles.
  • Follow all route directions and stops.
  • Notifies Transportation Director before an absence.
  • Works as a team with other drivers, monitors, students, parents and school representatives for the safe transportation of students and staff.
  • Attends trainings, monthly Transportation/Safety meetings as required during the year.
  • Keep regular assigned route and seating chart current and updated at all times.
  • Maintains professional standards and ethics. Avoids using derogatory, foul and unacceptable language or gestures. Encourages a positive educational environment by promoting and adhering to the staff and student attire (dress) codes and rules of conduct.
  • Maintains confidentiality concerning students.
  • Have problem solving and decision-making skills; effective verbal and listening communications skills.
  • Personal and professional attributes include: honesty, trustworthiness, respectful, patient, cultural awareness and sensitivity, sound work ethics, and deal with the public in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Assists with loading and unloading special education students.
  • Operates wheelchair ramps and secures wheelchairs with proper restraints.
  • Renew driver’s license and permits on a timely basis.
  • Complete required time sheets bi-weekly, including specific mileage for extracurricular activities, sick/personal days and turn in to Transportation Director.
  • Ability to use communication systems such as radios, cellular phone and GPS systems.
  • Ability to drive a variety of vehicles.
  • Ability to accept altered work schedules due to schedule changes at the last minute.
  • Ability to monitor time and maintain a timely schedule.
  • Provide medical attention to students and staff as needed.
  • Cleans the interior of the bus and exterior of windows as needed for safety.
  • Physical ability to complete a thorough pre-trip inspection including the engine compartment and provides a written report of the inspection before driving the vehicle.
  • Fuels vehicle prior to leaving on routes or trips.
  • Prepared to conduct an emergency evacuation of the vehicle.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Transportation Director.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and /or pulling; some climbing and balancing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant finger dexterity in order to operate a two-way radio when needed. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing.

Must be able to demonstrate and perform the emergency, evacuation procedures as described and defined by the Illinois School Bus Driver Training Curriculum and endorsed by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Board of Education. These procedures involve, but are not limited to, sitting on floor of the school bus at the rear door and scooting out the rear door to the ground.

The job is performed in a motorized vehicle in all types of weather and traffic conditions.
