Job summary

Hawaii State Department of Education seeks Educational Interpreter I/II to support deaf and hard-of-hearing students across schools under the Office of Student Support Services - Special Needs Section.

Responsibilities include interpreting classroom activities, coordinating with teachers and families, and possibly teaching basic sign language. Requires NCLB-related education, interpreter training, and certification prerequisites.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 48 credits from accredited institution; must include math and English courses.
  • Completion of an Educational Interpreter training program or equivalent.
  • ASL/Interpreting program substitution allowed for experience requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret/transliterate between deaf students and others in classrooms and activities.
  • Follow student IEPs and classroom schedules for interpretation.
  • Liaise to promote positive relations within the school and report progress.
