Job summary

School City of Hammond is seeking a Sign Language Interpreter to support deaf and hard of hearing students in classrooms, field trips, and other educational settings. The interpreter facilitates communication using sign language and spoken English, ensuring accessible instruction and successful participation in activities.

The role requires an Educational Interpreter Certificate and RID certification or EIPA rating of 3.5 or higher, with a commitment to professional conduct and ongoing

Qualifications

• Has high school diploma or equivalent
• Must hold an Educational Interpreter Certificate & maintain license
• RID Certification or EIPA rating of 3.5 or higher

Responsibilities

• Facilitate effective communication between sign language and spoken English
• Adhere to RID CPC and Professional Code of Conduct in all interactions
• Maintain highest standard of professional behavior including punctuality and collaboration with colleagues
• Relay concepts between languages for assessments, books, publications, or web pages
• Monitor student comprehension and adjust interpreting style accordingly
• Use appropriate visual modality at the child’s language level
• Prepare content in advance for educational material
• Foster student independence and minimize extraneous support as students mature
• Collaborate with the student’s education team and Teacher for the Deaf/Hearing Impaired
• Ensure environmental accommodations are available (lighting, seating) for accessibility
