Position Overview

The Schegistrar is responsible for scheduling, registering, verifying pre-authorizations and referrals, and maintaining patient diagnostic appointments, surgeries, and/or medical consultations for VCUHS.

This role involves accurately obtaining necessary information for hospital and physician records, governmental requirements, billing, and third-party payers. The position also emphasizes providing courteous and efficient service to patients, along with timely and professional documentation and verification of pre-registration information with the care team.

Work Schedule

Work days are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Requirements
  • Licensure, Certification, or Registration: N/A for both hire and continued employment
  • Experience REQUIRED: Strong customer service skills and a patient/customer-centered focus in all situations
  • Experience PREFERRED: Minimum of two years' experience with third-party medical insurance, HMO, and managed care; experience with CPT and ICD-10 coding; familiarity with GE/IDX, Cerner systems
  • Education/Training REQUIRED: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Education/Training PREFERRED: Associate Degree in Business Management or a related field; post-high school healthcare or medical billing coursework
Additional Responsibilities
  • Assist VCUHS Patient Revenue Cycle Department in obtaining maximum and timely reimbursement
  • Provide patients with information regarding VCUHS policies and procedures; direct them to appropriate nursing units or ancillary services
Other Requirements
  • May be required to work beyond normal hours to resolve backlog or contact patients for registration data
  • Serves all age groups
  • Physical activities include lifting less than 20 lbs, prolonged sitting, reaching, repetitive motions, and keyboard use
  • Requires mental and sensory skills such as recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking
  • Must handle a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to frequent changes
