Job summary

SCENE SHOP SUPERVISOR – Gulfshore Playhouse

GULFSHORE PLAYHOUSE SEEKS SCENE SHOP SUPERVISOR

Gulfshore Playhouse, a mission-driven, professional theatre company located in Naples, Florida, is seeking a dynamic, detail-oriented and organized individual to serve as Scene Shop Supervisor.

Gulfshore Playhouse offers a diverse season of straight plays and musicians ranging from venerated classics and Broadway hits to contemporary works and world premieres. The Playhouse is passionately committed to producing high-quality, professional theatre which exceeds the expectations of the cultured residents and visitors of Naples, FL.

Gulfshore Playhouse opened the Baker Theatre and Education Center, a state-of-the-art facility featuring a 350-seat mainstage with a Broadway-sized stage, a 125-seat flexible space, rehearsal studios, classrooms, and rental space in October 2024. In 2022, Gulfshore Playhouse became nationally recognized as the 77th member of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT).

Status: Full-time, year-round position
Start Date: January 2027

The Scene Shop Supervisor will work closely with the Technical Directors and Scenic Designer to implement and construct the scenic design of each production. They are responsible for constructing scenic elements as specified in the drafting provided by the Technical Direction staff and for the day-to-day operations of the scenic shop, including delegating tasks, maintaining an organized shop, cataloging and storing scenic elements, and assisting with load-ins and strikes. They will provide necessary training to seasonal staff and maintain a safe and healthy working environment.

The ideal individual will have a strong drive to provide high-quality work, sound judgment, strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work as part of a team. Some weekend and evening hours are required.

Skills

• Understanding of working drawings, elevations, cut lists, construction methods, pneumatics, hand and power tools, adhesives, foams, and metalworking
• Advanced knowledge of scenic construction techniques
• Experience with power tools and construction equipment, including saws and welding equipment
• Creative problem-solving
• Effective oral and written communication
• Ability to manage time, staff, and productivity effectively
• Ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines

Duties

• Lead scenic construction, rigging, and dry tech of scenery in the scene shop
• Report directly to the Assistant Technical Director and collaborate on technical drawings and build schedules
• Communicate scenic engineering and construction to scene shop staff
• Delegate projects to carpenters and technicians and manage scene shop workflow
• Maintain the build schedule and verify that projects meet drawings and quality expectations
• Verify that scenery is complete before load-in and prepare load-in and strike packages with the Production Supervisor
• Manage shop space and tool maintenance with the Assistant Technical Director
• Maintain a safe, healthy, and clean shop environment
• Construct scenery and special projects as needed
• Assist with load-ins, strikes, and load-outs
• Supervise and train seasonal staff
• Review and maintain shop inventories and repair scenery and equipment
• Lead daily shop cleanup and make approved shop purchases
• Perform other related work as required

Qualifications

• Three years of experience in the field
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
• Ability to use proper personal protective equipment
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
• Ability to climb ladders and mobile lifts, use catwalks, and work at heights
• Ability to work overhead with heavy equipment
• Ability to work in tight, enclosed, elevated, and dark spaces
• Ability to stand for long periods depending on assignment
• Ability to safely operate shop equipment and tools

Salary: $56,000-$60,000 annually, depending on experience. This position is exempt from overtime.
