The University of South Alabama's Theatre and Dance Department is seeking a Scene Shop Specialist to support production activities on the Mobile campus.

This role serves as technical director for productions, designs and supervises technical elements, mentors students, and ensures safety and compliance with budgets and schedules.

Full-time position with variable hours and a focus on hands-on construction, drafting and collaboration with faculty and guest artists.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in theater or related field and two years of scenery construction/operations experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Understanding of set and lighting design and drafting of scenery using various hand tools.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Technical Director for assigned productions.
  • Plan, coordinate, design and supervise technical production elements for Theatre and Dance productions.
  • Design scenery, lighting, and/or sound as needed.
  • Supervise and mentor student designers, technicians, and shop workers.
  • Assist in design, construction, installation, operation, and strike of production elements.
  • Manage production workloads to meet the six-week production schedule.
  • Maintain production budgets and inventories.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards in theatre and shop spaces.
  • Coordinate activities with faculty, staff, guest artists, and student crews.
  • Maintain production documentation and perform other duties as required.

The University of South Alabama's department of Theater and Dance is seeking to hire a Scene Shop Specialist.

Essential Functions

These are the job duties required of the position.

  • Serves as Technical Director for assigned productions.
  • Plans, coordinates, designs and supervises the technical production elements for Theatre USA productions.
  • Designs scenery, lighting, and/or sound as needed.
  • Supervises and mentors student designers, technicians, and shop workers in accordance with the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts technical theatre curriculum.
  • Assists in the design, construction, installation, operation, and strike of production elements.
  • Manages production workloads to ensure successful completion within the department's six-week production schedule.
  • Maintains production budgets.
  • Maintains inventories and orders materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Ensures compliance with university and industry safety standards within all theatre and shop spaces.
  • Coordinates production activities with faculty, staff, guest artists, and student crews.
  • Maintains production documentation.
  • Performing other production duties as assigned by the Department Chair or supervisor.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime hours as required.
  • Related duties as required.
