Job summary

East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office in Baton Rouge, LA seeks a Deputy to perform patrols, patrol high crime areas, and conduct investigations with emphasis on street-level drugs, gangs, and traffic enforcement.

The role requires POST certification, firearms qualification, and willingness to participate in regular range and defensive tactics training. Bi-weekly shifts and occasional overtime are expected.

Qualifications

• 1 year of work experience in Criminal Operations (excludes Communications or CIU).
• No disciplinary suspensions in last 6 months; other actions reviewed by selection committee.
• Basic Law Enforcement POST Certified.
• Firearms qualified.
• Must currently be in an armed law enforcement position.
• Willing to participate in bi-weekly Range training (CQB and firearms).
• Willing to participate in monthly division defensive tactics training.
• Must adhere to quarterly physical standards testing.

Responsibilities

• Gather and analyze information, interview witnesses, obtain statements, and prepare reports.
• Present findings in clear, impartial reports and court documents.
• Appear as a witness in criminal/administrative proceedings and draft warrants and affidavits.
• Identify community problems and develop countermeasures for street-level crime and gang activity.
• Patrol high crime areas and make lawful arrests.
• Participate in in-service training and stay current on legal and investigative materials.
• Operate surveillance equipment and computer systems; conduct short-term surveillance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Position title: Deputy

Division: SCAT

Shift: 10-hour variable shifts (Monday-Thursday)

Overtime: Required Occasionally

Job Duties: Assigned multiple tasks that include patrolling high crime areas, traffic enforcement, and operations that may be covert, as well as overt, targeting gang problem, and street level sources of illegal drugs within East Baton Rouge Parish.

• Gathers and analyzes information, searches for and gathers physical or documentary evidence or clues; interviews witness, interrogates suspects; obtains signed statements and affidavits; prepares investigative reports and case records.
• Presents findings in clear, logical, impartial and properly documented reports.
• Appears as a witness in criminal and administrative court proceedings; drafts and executes legal documents for use in criminal and administrative investigations, subpoenas for evidence, search warrants, arrest warrants and affidavits.
• Proactive identification of community problems such as street level drug dealers, and gang hangouts, and developing strategies to counteract them.
• Patrol high crime areas, and make lawful arrests
• Participates in in-service training; studies professional material relating to new investigative procedures and techniques; studies legal materials relating to court rulings and state and federal law; attends training sessions to acquire new skills.
• Operates and monitors electronic surveillance equipment; operates computers and computer software.
• Conduct short-term physical and electronic surveillance of suspects.
• Performs other duties as requested.

Qualifications

• 1 year of work experience in Criminal Operations (does not include Communications or CIU).
• No disciplinary suspensions within the last 6 months; all other disciplinary or corrective actions will be reviewed by the selection committee.
• Basic Law Enforcement P.O.S.T. Certified
• Firearms qualified
• Must currently be in an armed law enforcement position
• Must be willing to participate in bi-weekly Range training which consists of physically active Close Quarter Battle and firearms training
• Must be willing to participate in monthly division defensive tactics training
• Must adhere to quarterly physical standards testing
