Job summary

Alter Trading is seeking a hands-on Yard Operations associate to oversee the scrap material yard, verify inbound and outbound vehicles, enter weights, and process customer payments. The role offers hands-on training and a clear path for advancement within a longstanding company.

Responsibilities

• Visually verify inbound/outbound vehicles and record weights.
• Classify material types and enter codes in the computer.
• Process customer payments and verify paperwork for accuracy.
• File paperwork to support scheduled payments.
• Answer calls and direct questions to the appropriate area.
• Sort and distribute checks and maintain copies for records.
• Assist with end-of-shift cleanup and safety compliance.
• Support continuous improvement and monitor performance metrics.
• Identify metals and sort grades according to specs.
• Adhere to safety protocols and wear PPE.
• Handle other duties as assigned.

Our corporate support center and marketing operations are based in St. Louis, MO, with trading offices in St. Louis and Hong Kong.

Position Overview

Under supervision, oversee, facilitate, process and maintain accurate records for the yard of scrap materials received and/or shipped. This position offers a clear pathway for advancement. Team members may begin in a production role and receive comprehensive, hands-on training.

Key Responsibilities

• Visually verify inbound/outbound vehicles on scale deck; enter weight in computer.
• Visually verify material type; enter code in computer.
• Process payment of customers, verifying information is correct and material ticket for corresponding customer and price is correct.
• File appropriate paperwork to support scheduled payments to be made.
• Answering incoming calls; give directions, handle questions and/or direct to appropriate area/person.
• Sort completed checks, distribute original to customers and maintain copies and backup for filing.
• Assists with cleanup duties at the end of production
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and monitor performance metrics.
• Identifies different metals and sorts the various grades of according to specifications.
• Adhere to all safety protocols and consistently wear required PPE.
• All other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates will demonstrate a proactive approach to work, a strong commitment to safety, and a willingness to learn and grow. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, and prior experience in metals or industrial operations is advantageous. Math aptitude necessary, must be able to multi-task when handling customers and vendors in person, on the phone, etc. Strong communication skills and a positive, team-oriented attitude are essential.
