Job summary

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking two Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Communications Technicians to support 24/7 data communications between field sites and the Operations Control Center, serving Seattle and surrounding regions.

The roles involve installing, calibrating, and maintaining SCADA hardware and software across water, wastewater, and solid waste lines, with on-call responsibilities and on-site work five days per week.

Qualifications

• Three (3) years' experience in installation, maintenance, repair, and testing of electronic communications equipment and instruments.
• Experience with process instrumentation and control equipment is preferred.
• Experience with installing, programming and maintaining PLCs.
• Knowledge of SCADA systems and network communications equipment is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Work across SPU lines of business supporting the SCADA hardware and software components of the system.
• Install, calibrate, and maintain drainage and wastewater field instrumentation and control equipment.
• Assist in building and operating SCADA telecommunication systems and field equipment.
• Create input/update wiring diagrams, schematics, prints, as-builts and other documentation.
• Maintain and calibrate equipment including flow monitors and rain gauge sensors.
• Provide 24/7 on-call support to promptly repair malfunctioning SCADA components.

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking two (2) Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Communications Technicians to work with the Water and Wastewater SCADA Infrastructure.

These positions will provide 24-hour technical support and maintenance of data communications between field sites and the Operations Control Center. This is a core system that monitors and controls the transmission, treatment, distribution and water quality of the regional water supply serving about 1.6 million people, acts to ensure the operability of automated wastewater pump stations, combined sewer overflow (CSO) instrumentation, rain gauge sites, and instrumentation monitoring critical data from key areas throughout the entire SPU Line of Business.

These positions support the Water, Solid Waste, Drainage and Wastewater (DWW) SCADA integration project and requires a unique skill set of both field and bench work. IT component involves data acquired from field instruments that is transmitted to a control center via a dedicated SCADA network.

Education:

Associate Degree in electrical engineering or electronics Technology or a related field of study.

Experience:

Three (3) years' experience in the installation, maintenance, repair, and testing of electronic communications equipment and instruments. Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirement.

Licensing:

• Current, valid Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility is required.

To be successful in this role, a candidate will possess some of the following skills, knowledge and abilities:

• Experience with process instrumentation and control equipment
• Experience with installing, programming and maintaining PLCs
• Experience maintaining equipment, hardware and software associated with utility SCADA systems
• Experience with Network Communications Equipment and network maintenance highly desirable; CISCO CCNA classification a plus
• Knowledge of water, wastewater, drainage and wastewater and other utility systems, including SCADA systems for drainage and wastewater distribution systems and water treatment plants
• Able to plan and coordinate work activities and to work collaboratively with teams and crews impacted by SCADA
• Good written and oral communication skills, especially when conveying technical information to non-technical audiences
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment with diverse technical skills
• Ability to communicate and work effectively within a multi-cultural workforce serving diverse customer base
• Excellent organizational and documentation capabilities
• Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite including Visio, AutoCAD experience a plus
• Experience with CCSS, Outlook and Maximo (or other work management system).

Working Environment/Physical Demands:

• This position requires five (5) days on-site. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor
• Ability to work outdoors, nights, evenings, weekends and/or holidays as required
• Must be able to respond to emergency situations, as needed
• Be part of an on-call rotation, as needed
• Stand, walk, bend or work in confined spaces, around live sewage, near high voltage equipment, around high noise levels, at heights for extended periods of time, or around toxic/hazardous substances
• Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds
