Job summary

Durham County is seeking a SCADA/Instrumentation Technician to install, maintain, and repair SCADA hardware and plant instrumentation at the Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant. The role requires hands-on electrical/mechanical work in a county-owned utility system with on-site duties across multiple facilities.

The technician will operate under limited supervision, troubleshoot SCADA/PLC systems, and assist in safety procedures while supporting related wastewater operations and maintenance

Qualifications

  • Requires High School diploma or GED; instrumentation apprenticeship and related experience preferred.
  • Experience with SCADA/PLC systems and electrical safety procedures is essential.
  • Ability to perform preventive, corrective maintenance and operate with limited supervision.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The SCADA Technician position provides technical and professional electrical and mechanical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of SCADA hardware components and plant instrumentation and related electronic equipment and systems in the County-owned Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant (TWWTP), associated wastewater collection system, reuse water system and Rougemont well system.

Works independently, under limited supervision of the Utility Supervisor, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

The TWWTP is rated for an average daily flow of 12 million gallons per day and is specifically designed to meet future nutrient load requirements for the Jordan Lake nutrient management strategy. The TWWTP serves the southeast portion of Durham County inside and outside the Durham City limits and serves the Research Triangle Park within Durham County. The collection and treatment of domestic sewage and wastewater is vital to public health and clean water. It is among the most important factors responsible for the general level of good health enjoyed in the United States.

  • Troubleshoots and repairs SCADA and programmable logic controller (PLC) equipment control systems and motor control circuits.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and replaces electrical motors, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, gearboxes, pumps and other plant related equipment.
  • Enters preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance information into the computerized and maintenance management software.
  • Leads, trains and assists other plant staff in proper electrical safety procedures.
  • Maintains and repairs 480-volt electrical distribution systems and chemical feed systems.
  • Monitors the SCADA server.
  • Checks and calibrates electronic equipment.
  • Installs electrical raceway and wiring as needed.
  • Serves as Back-up Collection System Operator in Responsible Charge as needed.
  • Assist with performing the duties associated with the Senior Plant Maintenance Technician as required.
  • Completes special projects as assigned.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Three (3) year apprenticeship for instrumentation and four (4) years of experience or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
  • Must obtain NC Biological Wastewater Grade I Operator and Collections Grade I Operator certifications within one year of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs heavy work that involves constantly lifting, shoveling, and carrying 35 to 50 pounds on a regular and recurring basis and exerting 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.
