Job description

Duties: Daily Benching and fitting of band saws and other related Filing room maintenance. Including and not limited to the following:

  1. Band saw leveling and tensioning
  2. Saw changes at the machine centers
  3. Guide Grinding
  4. Machine trouble shooting
  5. Maintenance of filing room equipment
  6. Maintenance of sawing stations
  7. Pouring Babbitt
  8. Grinding Knives
  9. Assisting with any and all other filing duties including assisting other saw filers
  10. Maintain cleanliness of filing room(s) and related locations

To be considered for this position, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be able to perform work in a safe manner at all times within the guidelines of company lockout/tagout procedures and safety policies.
  2. Must work well with others and follow directions of the Filing Supervisor.
  3. Eligible candidates must have great communication skills and be self-starting.
  4. The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise level can be moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel objects as minor blemishes need to be recognized. Requires dexterity to handle tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds. Candidates must be physically able to perform all of these tasks.
  5. Experience as a fitter or Benchman preferred. We will consider training an individual with some relevant experience. Relevant experience might include previous work history in sawmill production, experience in an industrial tool room (such as machine shops) or fabrication shops, or other industrial labor.
  6. Great attendance and job longevity with previous work history is a must.

TRL has been working on improving the filing room equipment over the past few years and will continue to do so. Some of our equipment includes: Iseli Auto Bench, Iseli Swage, Vollmer CNC topper facer, Vollmer CNC side grinder.

Thompson River Lumber Co. is a small family-owned sawmill located in Thompson Falls, MT. The community offers a great environment to raise a family. The views and access to the outdoors are almost endless, with opportunities for hiking, hunting, and various outdoor motor sports. Access to camping is also available in every direction. The Clark Fork River provides a great venue for fishing, boating, swimming, or simply floating the lazy river with friends.
