Job summary

The City of Harrisonburg seeks a Technician I in the Sanitation Division to support municipal solid waste collection and related operations. The role offers a full-time schedule from 7:00am to 3:30pm, with benefits and on-call standby responsibilities as part of rotating coverage.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and 1–3 years of refuse collection experience, plus a valid CDL Class B with air brakes. Forklift certification is preferred but not required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; 1–3 years’ refuse collection/grounds maintenance experience.
• 18 years of age or older by hire date.
• Valid CDL Class B with air brakes; CDL required for Technician I level.
• Availability to work 7:00am–3:30pm, Monday–Friday.
• Rotating standby program for off-hours emergencies.
• Forklift certification preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Collect municipal solid waste, bulk/yard debris, and other trash; load into trucks and operate hydraulic mechanisms.
• Tag refuse for noncompliance.
• Operate specialized equipment independently.
• Handle, prevent spills, and clean up fuels and pollutants to minimize stormwater impact.
• Perform snow and ice removal with a plow-equipped refuse truck and other equipment.
• Participate in rotating standby program.
• Operate City vehicles in job duties.
• Perform other related duties as needed.
