The City of Akron seeks a Waste Collector to perform manual labor in the collection of household waste. This role involves loading recyclables and trash into a truck, operating vehicles, and ensuring safety during operations. It requires a valid Ohio driver's license and the ability to perform physical tasks under varying weather conditions.

An employee in this class performs heavy manual labor. Work is routine and repetitive in nature.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a Public Works Supervisor following repetitive procedures and with little opportunity for independent judgment. Work is performed out of doors in all weather conditions.
Collects and loads household recyclables, trash and garbage by placing contents of garbage cans, plastic bags or other containers into a packer truck on the street. Picks up all waste which spills around truck. Collects other household refuse such as furniture, appliances and brush placed at the curb or along a City right-of-way. Operates truck sweep blade to pack trash. Accompanies drivers to the dumpsite and assists in the dumping process. Provides ground assistance to the driver and provides traffic control during truck back-up and turning maneuvers. Assists in cleaning of trucks. May operate a pick-up truck to collect trash from various City facilities and clear trash from garage and parking lot areas. Washes, repairs, and delivers City trash carts. Collects trash and recyclables separately at City facilities and special events. Adheres to all City and departmental practices and safety procedures. Performs related work as required.
Possession of a valid State of Ohio operator's license.
Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods. Ability to operate motorized vehicles. List of essential job functions available upon request.
This is a classified position.
The selection process will consist of a competitive examination including a performance examination. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to be placed on the eligibility list. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 100%.
RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
