Job summary

The Town of Pecos City is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator II to perform complex construction and maintenance tasks by operating a range of heavy machinery. You will conduct routine inspections, log daily data, and ensure safety throughout operations.

Ideal candidates hold a high school diploma (or equivalent) with multiple years of equipment experience, plus a strong understanding of safety rules and GPS basics.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with at least three years of experience operating construction equipment at Heavy Equipment Operator II level with demonstrated ability to perform finish-grade work.
  • Some high school education or equivalent with at least four years of experience operating construction equipment at Heavy Equipment Operator II level with demonstrated ability to perform finish-grade work.
  • OR any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for daily compaction and cover of trash.
  • Operates heavy equipment including compactor, scrapper, motor grader, bulldozer, crane, skid steer, loader, and shovel for complex tasks.
  • Performs routine pre-operation inspections and logs daily data.
  • Monitors gauges and indicators to ensure safe operation.
  • Assists in trench excavation.
  • Performs or requests necessary repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Maintain readiness and safety of work face daily.
  • Adheres to all safety rules, guidelines, and codes.

General Purpose

The Heavy Equipment Operator will perform highly complex and difficult construction and maintenance activities by operating a variety of heavy equipment.

Reporting Relationship

Reports to and is under the direct supervision of the Sanitation Department Supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for daily compaction and cover of trash.
  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment such as a compactor, scrapper, motor grader, bulldozer, crane, skid steer, loader, and shovel to accomplish difficult or highly complex tasks.
  • Prior to operating equipment, conducts routine inspections to identify needed maintenance or repairs. Input daily data and information into logs.
  • Monitors gauges and other indicators to ensure safe operation.
  • Assists in the excavation of new trenches.
  • Performs or requests necessary repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Assist with repairs as needed.
  • Ensure work face is ready for use daily.
  • Adheres to all safety rules, guidelines, and codes.
  • Maintains records of time worked and materials used.
  • Learns site operation plans approved by TCEQ.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Thorough understanding of practices involved in the use of various types of heavy equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of maintenance and basic repairs associated with heavy equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of safety rules and ability to safely operate machinery.
  • Superior skill operating assigned equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Valid Texas Class B Driver's License is required.
  • Valid Texas Class A Driver's License preferred.
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with at least three years of experience operating construction equipment at Heavy Equipment Operator II level with demonstrated ability to perform finish-grade work: OR
  • Some high school education or equivalent with at least four years of experience operating construction equipment at Heavy Equipment Operator II level with demonstrated ability to perform finish-grade work.
  • OR any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Thorough understanding of practices involved in the use of various types of heavy equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of maintenance and basic repairs associated with heavy equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of safety rules and ability to safely operate machinery.
  • Superior skill operating assigned equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Understand GPS systems and know simple math calculations and measurements.
Tools & Equipment Used

Motorized vehicles, various phone types. Proficient with and can use a grinder, torch, meter stick, tape measure, compactor, front loader, dirt scrapper, motor grader, bulldozer, water truck and skid steer.

  • Must be able to physically operate heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and stand to operate and repair heavy equipment.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
