Anchor Sandblasting and Coatings is seeking a Sandblaster Helper for a project in North Charleston, SC. The role involves loading vehicles, cleaning tanks, removing paint and scale from ships’ metal surfaces, and assisting blasters with hoses and grit in a shipyard setting.
Requirements include high school diploma and prior shipyard experience preferred; physical labor, ability to lift heavy objects, and willingness to work shift and overtime. This is a 4-6 month contract with travel as needed.
Performs tasks in shipyard: loads vehicles, uses hand truck or dolly, cleans tanks, ships, piers, drydocks and other working areas, using broom and water house. Sort lumber, metals and other scrap materials. Removes paint and scale from ships' metal surfaces, using hand or powered wire brushes. Conveys materials and tools to work site.
Performs basic and physical tasks such as transporting, loading/unloading materials, tools and equipment on and off trucks and ships. Duties will include but are not limited to paint removal, lagging removal, removal and installation equipment. Use power tools and basic hand tools to complete tasks assigned.
High school or equivalent.
Previous experience working in a shipyard or similar industry highly desirable. Shipyard workers may serve as trade helpers, work on supply, operate as fire watches for hot work, assist in clean up and generally get an opportunity to learn more about working in a shipyard environment.
Must be able to cooperate and work well with other employees and shipyard personnel. Must be able to take direction from supervisors or more experienced workers. Must be able to carry out simple to complex instructions in a safe and efficient manner.
Must be able to crawl, stoop, bend, and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to lift and move heavy objects. Must be physically able to perform the requirements of the job. May be required to wear a respirator to safely perform assigned tasks.
Repetitive, physical work. Regularly exposed to dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, high noise level, chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, ambient weather conditions, hazardous machinery, precarious places, proximity to other employees. Often works on scaffolds and ladders for periods of time. To avoid injury, safety clothing required along with safety devices to protect eyes, head, or hearing. Shift work and overtime involved most of the time. Travel may be required.
