Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan in the Tyrone, NM area is seeking an entry-level sampling technician to support drill sample collection and laboratory prep at the Tyrone copper mining complex. You will obtain representative samples, label them correctly and deliver to the assay lab, while maintaining safety and equipment reliability.

Qualifications

• One year experience in a relevant area is preferred.
• Knowledge of sampling equipment, processes and techniques.
• Able to perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
• Strong planning, prioritizing and scheduling skills.
• Ability to use GIS/GPS mapping tools and MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Identify drill holes requiring sampling and coordinate with dispatch and drilling teams.
• Obtain representative samples following SOPs and label accurately.
• Assist with quality control and duplicate sampling if needed.
• Transport samples to the assay laboratory promptly.
• Support entry-level analytical tasks and routine reporting.
• Provide technical support to ore control and surveying staff as required.
• Ensure equipment is functional and sampling gear is cleaned after use.
• Perform other duties as required.

Where You Will Work

Tyrone is an open-pit copper mining complex located in Grant County, New Mexico – just 10 miles south of the historic mining community of Silver City. The copper processing facilities currently consist of a solvent extraction/electrowinning operation with an annual maximum capacity of approximately 100 million pounds of copper.

What You Will Do

• Identify which drill holes require sampling from the Drill Pattern. Must work closely and coordinate work schedule with dispatch and/or drilling and blasting.
• Obtain representative samples following the appropriate SOP's. Ensures that samples are obtained from equally spaced locations within the drill hole, that the minimum sample weight is obtained, that samples are correctly labeled, etc.
• Assists with quality control; for those sample locations that are identified as locations for duplicate samples, repeats the sampling process on the same blast hole. Ensures that the duplicate samples are correctly labeled and that both the original and the duplicate are identified accordingly for laboratory staff.
• Transport and deliver all samples to the assay laboratory, in a timely manner.
• May perform entry level analytical laboratory tasks to prepare samples for analysis or assist with routine chemical analysis and reporting tasks.
• May provide technical support to ore control and surveying staff, as required.
• Responsible for verifying that equipment is functional and operating properly.
• Ensures that all sampling equipment is cleaned after each sample has been taken.
• Perform other duties as required.

What You Bring To Freeport

• One (1) year experience in an area or areas relevant to the assignment.
• Knowledge of sampling equipment, processes, methods and techniques
• Able to conduct preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
• Skilled in planning, prioritizing and scheduling daily work assignments.
• Skill in safely using, maintaining and repairing specialized equipment to complete assigned duties, including GIS/GPS mapping techniques.
• Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
• Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Knowledge of site processes, equipment and infrastructure
• Able to use a variety of computer software applications, including Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

What We Offer You

The estimated pay range for this role is currently$21.00- $29.00/hour. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
