Sales Tax Analyst – State & Local Indirect Tax

Location: Memphis, TN; Omaha, NE; or Atlanta, GA (preferred). Open to candidates located in CST or EST time zones. Hybrid work is preferred, though remote arrangements may be considered for the right candidate.

Highline Warren is a vertically integrated distributor and manufacturer of maintenance repair products for the North American automotive aftermarket, primarily providing conventional and synthetic lubricants, windshield washer fluids, antifreezes, and chemical products. Highline Warren is the largest and lowest cost producer of windshield wiper fluid and passenger car motor oil. With a diverse platform and vertically integrated capabilities across 12 manufacturing and 15 distribution centers, Highline Warren employs over 1,800 individuals to serve over 15,000+ customers with $1.7 billion in annual revenue.

Summary:

The Sales Tax Analyst role provides support to the Tax Director with respect to sales tax accounting, use tax accounting, sales tax compliance requirements, lubricating oil excise tax compliance requirements, property tax, and ongoing special projects.

This is a professional role, and the ideal candidate must possess the ability to work in a fast-paced, continuously changing environment with minimal supervision. Organizational and effective communication skills are a must.

Responsibilities:

  1. Under the supervision of the Tax Director, prepares various tax returns, including sales tax, use tax, lubricating excise tax, property tax, and gross receipts tax.
  2. Processes tax payments via accounts payable, state websites, and other electronic and paper check methods.
  3. Researches, analyzes, and communicates to Tax Director status of nexus with existing and potential jurisdictions.
  4. Maintains and reconciles tax account balances and prepares monthly reports.
  5. Resolves sales and use tax notices through written and oral communication.
  6. Works with accounting and other staff to determine optimal method(s) for measuring and monitoring use taxes.
  7. Provides sales & use tax support to sales/customer support team and procurement teams.
  8. Ensures requests for resale certificates are fulfilled for customers and vendors.
  9. Assists Tax Director with tax audits as needed.
  10. Works with legal and regulatory departments and various company locations to ensure that all necessary licensing and permits are obtained and current.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business.
  2. Previous accounting and multistate sales & use tax, property tax, or other related tax experience (at least 1-3 years) required.
  3. Demonstrate strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with an eye for detail.
  4. Proficient in sales tax software.
  5. Working knowledge of Vertex software or other similar sales and use tax software preferred.
  6. Experience with software implementation projects a plus.
  7. Experience with a national manufacturing and/or distribution company.
  8. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
