Job summary

Spherion Staffing New Jersey is partnering with an established organization in South Plainfield, NJ seeking a Sales Engineer / Structural Steel Estimator to join its estimating team. This is a highly technical role for someone who can interpret contract drawings and specifications, develop accurate estimates, and provide design and value-engineering support.

This role emphasizes detailed takeoffs, Bluebeam usage, and adherence to structural standards.

Qualifications

• BS in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering, preferably with a structural emphasis.
• Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
• Experience in structural steel design and/or estimating.
• Bluebeam and/or Revit experience is highly desirable.
• EIT designation—or the ability/desire to pursue licensure is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Review contract drawings, specifications, and project documentation to determine material and labor requirements.
• Perform detailed takeoffs and maintain documentation using Bluebeam.
• Develop accurate project costing and estimates.
• Design and verify structural components in accordance with applicable standards and codes (AISC, SDI, SJI, AWS).
• Review steel joist and deck specifications and identify opportunities for economy or weight savings.
• Develop preliminary/budgetary designs and pricing from conceptual customer information.
• Prepare scopes of work, exclusions, clarifications, conditions, and bid documentation.
• Provide technical support and answer engineering questions for estimators, sales professionals, and customers.
• Review designs for accuracy and conformance to structural design requirements.
• Assist with change-order pricing and project-cost accuracy.

Are you an engineering or estimating professional who understands structural steel, construction drawings, takeoffs, and project costing?

We’re partnering with an established organization in South Plainfield, NJ seeking a Sales Engineer / Structural Steel Estimator to join its estimating team. This is a highly technical role for someone who can interpret contract drawings and specifications, develop accurate estimates, and provide design and value-engineering support.

This is NOT a traditional outside-sales position. We are specifically seeking candidates with an engineering, structural-steel, construction estimating, or closely related technical background.

What You’ll Do

• Review contract drawings, specifications, and project documentation to determine material and labor requirements.
• Perform detailed takeoffs and maintain documentation using Bluebeam.
• Develop accurate project costing and estimates.
• Design and verify structural components in accordance with applicable standards and codes, including SJI, SDI, AISC, and AWS.
• Review steel joist and deck specifications and identify opportunities for greater economy or weight savings.
• Develop preliminary/budgetary designs and pricing from conceptual customer information.

Who We Want to Meet

The strongest candidates will bring a BS in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering, preferably with a structural emphasis. Relevant experience may substitute for the formal degree when combined with some applicable education.

You should also have:

• Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
• Structural steel design and/or estimating experience
• Strong understanding of takeoffs, costing, and technical project requirements
• Bluebeam and/or Revit experience is highly desirable
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information to customers and internal teams
• EIT designation—or the ability/desire to pursue future licensure—is a plus
