Job summary

Canam Steel Corp in South Plainfield, NJ seeks a cost estimator/engineer to analyze contract documents and prepare detailed cost estimates for steel joist and deck products. You will support CSC sales and customers with value engineering and budgeting guidance, serving as technical support for both sales and estimating.

The role requires BS in Civil/Structural/Architectural Eng, EIT preferred, and strong skills in reading drawings, AutoCAD, Revit/BlueBeam, and MS Office.

Qualifications

• BS in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering; structural emphasis preferred.
• EIT or licensure in the future preferred.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret drawings, specifications, and procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient PC skills: AutoCAD and Microsoft Office; Revit or BlueBeam a plus.

Responsibilities

• Reviews contract documents to determine material and labor requirements and prepares itemized lists.
• Utilizes BlueBeam to conduct takeoffs and record work.
• Inputs takeoffs into CSC Design and Pricing software for accurate costing.
• Design components using software to meet specs and codes (SJI, SDI, AISC, AWS).
• Verify steel joist/deck specifications per contract documents.
• Review and redesign members for economy and weight savings.
• Provide budgetary designs and pricing from conceptual info.
• Prepare scope of work with exclusions, clarifications, and conditions.
• Answers engineering questions from CSC Estimators, Sales, and Customers.
• Reviews estimator designs for accuracy and conformance to notes.
• Assist with change order pricing and accuracy.

Job Summary:

Analyzes and interprets contract drawings, specifications, and other documentation to prepare cost estimates for steel joist & deck products, projects, or services. Provides additional design guidance to both CSC sales and customers regarding value engineering opportunities as well as preliminary design budgets. Serves as the technical support for both CSC sales and estimating.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Reviews contract documents to determine material and labor requirements and prepares itemized lists.
• Utilizes BlueBeam to conduct efficient takeoffs and record of work.
• Inputs takeoff into CSC Design and Pricing software to determine accurate project costing.
• Design components using computer software to meet the requirements of applicable specifications and codes (SJI, SDI, AISC, AWS, etc).
• Verify specification of steel joists and deck based on requirements presented in the contract documents.
• Reviews and redesigns members for greater economy and/or weight savings.
• Provides budgetary designs and pricing for joist and deck products given only basic conceptual information from the customer.
• Prepares scope of work along with all exclusions, clarifications and conditions. Lists all bid documents with dates used in preparation of estimate.
• Answers engineering questions from CSC Estimators, Sales, and Customers.
• Reviews estimator designs for accuracy and conformance to structural design notes.
• Assists with change order pricing and accuracy .
• Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in an effective manner with customers, coworkers, and supervisors
• Performs other job duties as assigned by supervisor

$75,000-$90,000

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on the job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position. The range may vary by location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

In addition to base salary, this role will be eligible for participation in Canam Steel Corp (CSC)'s benefits programs, including medical, dental, vision, (plus additional voluntary benefits) and 401K (with employer match).

REQUIREMENTS:

• BS in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering with preference for structural emphasis (experience can be replacement for formal degree although some formal education required)
• EIT or ability to obtain licensure in the future preferred
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret drawings, specifications, and technical procedures
• Ability to speak effectively with customers
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
• PC skills to include the following software: AutoCAD and Microsoft Suite of Products. Revit or BlueBeam skills a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• General office environment.
• May require occasional exposure to production area with airborne particles, loud noises, and extreme heat and cold. Personal protection equipment is required when entering manufacturing plant.
