Summary
The Emergency Room Technician performs various patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients under the ultimate direction and supervision of a registered nurse.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate patient care activities for all ER patients, including departmental flow logging, setup for procedures, documentation, discharge instructions, and coordination of other professional services as directed.
- Remove sutures/staples after wound assessment by the physician.
- Apply slings, ace wraps, cervical collars, wrist and knee immobilizers.
- Apply posterior splints, including but not limited to: sugar tong splints, thumb spica splints, ulnar gutter splints when directed by the physician.
- Measure patients for crutches.
- Perform skin scrubs on dirty wounds prior to laceration repair.
- Provide wound care applications of OTC ointments, Gelfoam, Silvadene, and apply aseptic or sterile dressings.
- Assist with gastric lavage as directed.
- Perform EKGs on critical and non-critical patients.
- Perform phlebotomy on patients.
- Determine a patient's oxygen saturation using a pulse oximeter.
- Document vital signs and all interventions on the Emergency Department Clinical Record, signing with full name.
- Consider age-specific needs: Neonate, Child, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric.
- Initiate crutch walking teaching.
- Review preprinted instructions with patients and refer all questions to physicians.
- Set up sterile instruments for procedures, applying sterile technique principles.
- Rinse, reassemble, and prepare Central Supply equipment for return to CSR.
- Order, maintain, and keep track of ER supplies inventory.
- Apply safety principles in testing and maintaining oxygen tanks.
Required Qualifications
- More than one year's experience as a technician in an emergency room preferred.
- Previous phlebotomy and/or EKG experience preferred.
- Basic computer knowledge.
Education
- High School diploma.
- BLS certification required.
