Job summary

Primary Purpose :

Works as part of the Safety team to monitor and enforce all aspects of safety and environmental compliance. Responsible to oversee and assist with environmental compliance duties and proper management of regulated wastes, including collection, packaging, shipment and documentation in compliance with EPA and DOT/IATA regulations. Responsible for assisting in and conducting training sessions in the areas of life safety, emergency planning, hazardous materials handling and security. Performs inspections, surveys and audits, prepares and conducts drills/exercises and educational events, conducts ergonomic assessments, and distributes information and safety equipment. Maintains first aid kits, AEDs, C.E.R.T. and HAZMAT response supplies and equipment, and performs emergency response training.

Essential Functions :

Oversees collection, packaging and disposal of regulated laboratory wastes (i.e., chemical, biological, and radiological).

Ensures appropriate containment and proper labeling of regulated waste containers.

Establishes efficient procedures for both routine and as needed collection of regulated wastes.

Initiates and maintains documentation of waste shipments including spreadsheet entry of related data.

Participates as member of HazMat Response Team.

Performs annual safety audits.

Conducts fire extinguisher training.

Conducts monthly fire extinguisher inspections.

Performs ergonomic workstation evaluations and training.

Contributes to course development in mandatory online training program.

Conducts other safety, security and environmental training as assigned.

Performs ergonomic workstation evaluations and training.

Prints, orders and distributes hazard warning labels and postings as requested.

Maintains HAZMAT response supplies and equipment, performs emergency response training and duties as required.

Maintains filing system for documentation associated with hazardous materials shipments.

Physical and Other Requirements :

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate: Frequently and effectively communicates with others.

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Color Vision: Perception of and ability to distinguish colors

Must pass Dept of Justice criminal history background checks as a condition of employment.

Must be able to complete and maintain 40 hour hazardous waste/emergency response training.

Must be able to obtain and maintain respirator certification.

Must meet physical requirements of HazMat Responder, including respirator use.

Education
Required

High School Diploma or Equivalent or better.

Preferred

Associates Degree or better in Chemistry or related field.

Experience
Required

Associate’s degree in Chemistry and Life Science or equivalent college coursework

Intermediate word processing and spreadsheet proficiency, preferably in MS Word and Excel

Preferred

Certifications in Hazardous Materials Management or Spill Response

Documented coursework in chemistry, biology, industrial hygiene or occupational safety

24- or 40-hour HazMat responder training

Previous RCRA recordkeeping experience
