Job summary

ARUP Laboratories in Salt Lake City invites applicants for an Electron Microscopist Trainee position. This training role prepares the employee to work independently and pursue MSA certification, under supervision of a Laboratory Supervisor or anatomic pathologist.

Responsibilities include performing analytic procedures in the electron microscopy lab, operating instruments, ensuring quality control, and assisting in training new staff.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Associates Degree or better preferred.
• Associate's degree or 60 semester hours with chemistry, physics, biology, or mathematics.

Responsibilities

• Performs selected moderate, and/or highly complex analytic processes under direction.
• Operates electron microscopy instruments and equipment.
• Performs and documents quality control and flags results outside criteria.
• Assists in training new employees and follows SOPs.
• Maintains a clean, organized work area and proper inventory of reagents and supplies.
• Responds to technical questions within training scope and refers issues as needed.
• Supports data collection for QA indicators and contributes to laboratory turnaround times.

Primary Purpose :

The Electron Microscopist Trainee is a training position, preparing the employee to work independently to further gain MSA (Microscopy Society of America) certification. The trainee provides services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the electron microscopy laboratory. Works under the direction of a Laboratory Supervisor or anatomic pathologist. Duties include performance of all aspects of a technical nature in the electron microscopy lab for which documented training and competency has been established.

Essential Functions :

Performs selected moderate, and/or highly complex analytic processes under appropriate direction. Uses routine and specialized automated and non-automated laboratory procedures and/or techniques for which the employee is qualified, trained, and demonstrates competency according to established lab section operating procedures (SOP’s).

Performs analytical and decision-making functions with direct supervision.

Recognizes and reports abnormal results. Recognizes unexpected or implausible results, errors, and problems with patient tests. Refers resolution to a Laboratory Supervisor and/or pathologist.

Operates and ensures proper functioning of selected electron microscopy instruments and equipment.

Performs and documents quality control. Refers QC results which fail lab criteria to Laboratory Supervisor for resolution.

Understands appropriate specimen collection, handling, and transport procedures.

Processes data, verifies accuracy, enters, and verifies data in the laboratory computer system, along with appropriate explanatory or interpretive information. Meets lab section turnaround times.

Meets output measures as defined by individual group procedures.

Answers telephone calls in a timely and courteous manner. Provides results available in the computer as requested to physicians, nurses, and laboratorians. Refers problems to Laboratory Supervisor.

Maintains clean and orderly work area. Cleans bench surfaces and equipment each shift or other contamination or spills. Documents as required.

Stocks and maintains reagents and supplies.

Refers requests for special and unusual tests to the Laboratory Supervisor and/or Group Manager.

Responds to technical questions consistent with level of training.

As assigned, assists in the training of new employees.

May assist in data collection for QA indicators.

Other duties as assigned.

Physical and Other Requirements :

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate: Frequently communicate with others.

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Color Vision: Perception of and ability to distinguish color.

Associate's degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in at least two of the following areas: chemistry, physics, biology, or mathematics.
