Job summary

The Safety Surveyor at Boston Ship Repair supports the company safety program by conducting workplace inspections, identifying hazards, and monitoring compliance with safety procedures aboard ships and in the shipyard. The role may perform Shipyard Competent Person duties when properly trained and designated by the company.

Responsibilities

• Conduct routine safety inspections in shipyard and on vessels.

• Support corrective and preventive actions to reduce hazards.

• Assist with investigations of incidents and near-misses.
• Conduct safety orientations and training as needed.
• Support confined-space entry, hot work, and PPE requirements.
• Use atmospheric testing equipment when trained and authorized.
• Maintain safety and testing records and participate in drills.
• Perform other safety-related shipyard duties as assigned.

Safety Surveyor Position

Salary Range: $33.45 To $47.44 Hourly

Department: Safety

Reports To: Safety Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Type: Full-Time, Hourly - Union

Pay Range: $33.45-$47.44 per hour, in accordance with the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement

Summary

The Safety Surveyor supports Boston Ship Repair's safety program by conducting workplace inspections, identifying potential hazards, monitoring compliance with Company safety procedures, and supporting safe work practices throughout the shipyard and onboard vessels. The position may perform Shipyard Competent Person duties when properly trained, qualified, and designated by the Company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct routine safety inspections throughout the shipyard and onboard vessels.
• Identify unsafe conditions and communicate corrective actions to employees and supervisors.
• Support the development and implementation of corrective and preventive actions to address identified safety hazards and reduce recurrence.
• Monitor compliance with Company safety policies and applicable OSHA requirements.
• Assist with incident, injury, and near-miss investigations.
• Conduct or assist with employee safety orientations and training.
• Support confined-space entry, hot work, lockout/tagout, fall protection, and PPE requirements.
• Understand the Safety Surveyor Checklist and meet minimum requirements.
• Perform atmospheric testing and inspections when trained, qualified, and authorized.
• Properly use and calibrate required atmospheric testing equipment.
• Review and follow applicable Marine Chemist certificates and instructions.
• Maintain required safety, Competent Person, testing, and calibration records.
• Participate in emergency-response activities and safety drills.
• Perform other safety-related and shipyard duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred.
• Five or more years of shipyard, ship repair, construction, manufacturing, or related industrial experience preferred.
• Knowledge of OSHA shipyard safety requirements and safe work practices.
• First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred or ability to obtain.
• Shipyard Competent Person training and qualification required for employees assigned Competent Person responsibilities.
• Ability to properly use atmospheric testing equipment when assigned.
• Strong communication, documentation, and hazard-recognition skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to work any shift, including overtime and weekends, as required.

Physical Demands

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb throughout the workday.

• Ability to work at heights and in confined or enclosed spaces when properly trained and authorized.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
• Ability to occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.

Work is performed in both office and active industrial shipyard environments, including onboard vessels, waterfront areas, confined spaces, and production areas. The employee may be exposed to noise, weather conditions, fumes, dust, moving equipment, machinery, and other conditions normally associated with shipyard operations.

This is a union position. Wages, hours, overtime, benefits, seniority, and other terms and conditions of employment are governed by the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
