Job summary

Interstate Waste Services is seeking a Market Safety Director to lead all facets of safety across landfill, rail and short haul operations in the NY/NJ/OH markets. The role will drive health and safety programs, ensure regulatory compliance, and lead field operations with strong leadership and collaboration.

The position requires 10+ years in safety, CSP is a plus, and 25% travel to NY/NJ. The role reports to the Market Area VP of Landfill and aligns with corporate safety initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science or equivalent
• 10+ years of progressive Health & Safety experience in relevant industries
• Strong knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and federal/state/local H&S and Transportation compliance regulations
• Valid driver’s license with 25% travel to NY/NJ area to support operations
• Bilingual English/Spanish skills are preferred

Responsibilities

• Lead safety strategy aligned with operational goals and ensure program compliance
• Serve as SME in safety regulations and communicate site-specific programs
• Conduct audits, inspections, and emergency preparedness drills across locations
• Investigate safety concerns and lead root-cause analyses of incidents
• Design and deliver safety training and onboarding for frontline staff
