Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Serves as an in-house expert on OSHA, KOSHA, PSC, DOT, PHMSA, and NESC regulatory matters across the company.
  • Coordinates compliance with company policies (LOTO, hot work, confined space, etc.).
  • Prepares and documents safety meetings and toolbox talks at predefined intervals.
  • Oversees contractors to ensure safety expectations are aligned with LG&E/KU requirements.
  • Delivers safety training as needed and participates in safety committees.

Overview

This position will provide safety oversight to Project Engineering’s construction sites. The role involves actively working in the field, observing contractors, correcting safety hazards, and supporting the implementation of safety procedures. This position is intermediate level with formal safety & health education and/or field experience. This position ensures effectiveness of safety programs and initiatives within the Project Engineering group by demonstrating and applying knowledge of health and safety laws, rules, regulations, and general construction safety fundamentals. This position will work closely on assignments with departmental management and/or more experienced health/safety professionals to develop basic knowledge of health and safety laws, applicable rules and regulations, as well as general construction safety applications.

Project Engineering Department Overview – Project Engineering projects include new generation (such as natural gas combined cycle plants and solar facilities), large-scale battery storage, and other environmental compliance (selective catalytic reduction technology, effluent guidelines water treatment, etc.) projects. Project Engineering works interdepartmentally within LG&E-KU, as well as with outside consultants in planning, permitting, and execution of major capital projects.

This position could be located anywhere in the KU or LG&E territory.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as an in-house expert and consultant on OSHA, KOSHA, PSC, DOT, PHMSA, and NESC regulatory matters throughout the company.
  • Coordinates compliance with Company Policy, such as LOTO, hot work, confined space, etc..
  • Prepares, conducts or coordinates, and documents departmental safety meetings and tailgate/toolbox meetings at predefined intervals.
  • Provides oversight of business partners to ensure safety expectations are met and in line with LG&E/KU requirements. Attends project planning, progress, and other relevant project meetings.
  • Delivers safety related training as required.
  • Participates and often serves as departmental liaison for various focus groups and/or safety committee(s).
  • Works with management to ensure that assigned work areas, processes, and procedures are in compliance with applicable federal, state, and company regulations.
  • Assists management and other safety professionals in investigations, follow-up, and mitigation plans in response to accidents and near misses.
  • Conducts regular field inspections/observations/audits to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and company safety policies. Maintain a strong presence in the field, serving as a resource and point of contact for safety related inquiries and concerns.
  • Assists in the training and coaching of employees on safety observation skills.
  • Exemplifies the company’s commitment to safety and health by exhibiting a highly professional demeanor at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience on a year for year basis

Required Experience

3+ years Professional safety and/or industry specific line-of-business experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Must have OSHA 30 certification. OSHA 500 or CHST is preferred.
  • Ability to use professional judgment to solve straightforward problems with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to analyze possible solutions and make effective decisions using standard procedures.
  • Strong organization, planning, and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, concise feedback to contractors and workers.
  • Competent in use of standard software packages. (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • First Aid/CPR certification is preferred.
