Position Description:

D.H. Griffin Wrecking is seeking an experienced Safety Specialist. The position will be responsible for the implementation/enforcement and training of personnel in the corporate safety policy as well as applicable local, state, and federal safety policies/laws. This position will be required to conduct audits of multiple jobsites, write, and effectively communicate corrective actions and training to all personnel at all levels of management. This position requires a high level of independence and possess a high level of skill/competence in all aspects of safety hazard identification/corrective actions/training. This position will also have extensive interaction with field and management personnel. Ability to conduct safety training in a variety of safety subjects. This position will also occasionally be required to assist with the training/supervision of other safety personnel. This position will require for the candidate to travel within NC and to other states.

Duties/Responsibilities/Knowledge of:

  1. DHG Safety Policies/Procedures as well as comprehensive knowledge of any local/state/federal laws and/or safety regulations. (OSHA, EPA, NFPA, etc.)
  2. Identification of environmental hazards and ability to recommend corrective/protective measures to protect personnel.
  3. Effectively identify/recognize safety hazards and advise DHG personnel on compliance and mitigation of safety/environmental deficiencies.
  4. Heavy construction and demolition techniques/practices.
  5. Development and implementation of site-specific safety plans/procedures and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and pre-task plans as necessary.
  6. Conducts routine and follow-up environmental health, safety, and hazard inspections of jobsites.
  7. Responds to emergency situations involving emergency situations, accidents/incidents and prepares reports of findings and submits recommendations.
  8. Effectively conducts incident investigations and root cause analysis as required.
  9. Analyzes accident and incident reports for trends; makes recommendations for correcting unsafe conditions and actions.
  10. Effectively communicates with DHG personnel to ensure implementation of safety protocols/procedures/policy.
  11. Organizes and conducts training to personnel on a variety of safety topics.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  13. Assists with mentoring/training Safety Specialists as required/requested.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Skill in performing safety inspections ensuring compliance with DHG safety policies/procedures, OSHA, EPA and any other local, state, federal safety standards.
  2. Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  1. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  2. Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols.
  3. Skill in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with OSHA safety standards.
  4. Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures.
  5. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  6. Skill in developing safety procedures and protocols.
  7. Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
  8. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree and or minimum of 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  2. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution (technical colleges, etc.) that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
  3. Possession of and/or working toward a professional safety designation (ASP, CSP, CHST, etc.)
  4. Ability to respond to emergency situations 24 hours/day.
  5. Ability to frequently travel to and stay at jobsites for extended periods of time.
  6. Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  7. Completion of safety related train-the -trainer courses related to safety topics such as confined space, fall protection, silica, etc.
  8. OSHA 500/510
