Job summary

General Motors seeks a Safety Representative to support safety for the North America Engineering & Tooling Center in Flint, Michigan, and select enterprise sites where hazard and risk identification are critical.

You will provide Workplace Safety guidance, mentor leaders, and drive continuous improvement in injury and risk reduction. Onsite role with travel within Southeast Michigan and collaboration with unions is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required in a related field.
• Experience in occupational safety and health, manufacturing engineering, or related area.
• Ability to travel domestically, mostly within Southeast Michigan.
• Ability to collaborate with UAW joint partners.
• Strong communication, analytical, organizational, interpersonal and project management skills.

Job Description

We are seeking a Safety Representative to join our dynamic team and provide safety support for the North America Engineering & Tooling Center (NAETC) in Flint, Michigan, as well as select areas across the enterprise where hazard and risk identification are critical. This role may require occasional travel throughout Southeast Michigan to conduct risk assessments and support the G‑Risk process.

What You’ll Do

• Provide Workplace Safety technical and regulatory guidance, mentoring, and coaching to organizational leaders and employees.
• Collaborate with GM organizations to integrate safety into new equipment, existing processes, and key initiatives while supporting implementation of the Workplace Safety System.
• Advise site leadership on compliance with GM Workplace Safety standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Review new equipment and processes for conformance with Health and Safety Design Standards and recommend effective risk controls.
• Analyze safety data and site performance to identify trends, assess conformance, and drive continuous improvement in injury and risk reduction.
• Partner with site leadership to strengthen the Workplace Safety culture and promote a safe, healthy, and inclusive work environment.
• Build partnerships with Enterprise Operations Leadership, Human Resources, Industrial Hygiene, Health Services, local union representatives, and other key stakeholders to address safety concerns.
• Investigate accidents and injuries, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions and prevention strategies.
• Create and enhance safety programs, training, and employee development initiatives that promote hazard awareness and individual accountability.
• Facilitate safety meetings, committees, and cross‑functional discussions; create and deliver professional presentations on safety performance, risks, and recommendations.
• Manage and enhance the site’s safety SharePoint site by keeping content accurate, current, and accessible.
• Demonstrate a proactive, independent, and responsive approach to identifying risks, developing solutions, and influencing leaders and employees to advance a strong safety culture.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

• Bachelor's degree is required.
• Experience in occupational safety and health, manufacturing engineering, or a related field.
• Ability to travel domestically, mostly within Southeast Michigan, based on business needs.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with UAW joint partners.
• Demonstrated ability to identify safety hazards and risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and adhere to established plans.
• Well‑developed analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including facilitation, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
• Proficiency with standard computer software applications.
• Ability to bend, twist, kneel, crouch, and reach while performing work‑related tasks.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Safety Sciences, or Engineering.
