Job summary

Grunley Construction is hiring a Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) to manage safety programs across our projects. You will implement Safety Management Systems, conduct audits, and lead safety training to ensure regulatory compliance on site in Norfolk, VA.

The role requires OSHA 30-hour and First Aid/CPR, with preferred certifications and a safety-related degree. Ten years of field safety experience with construction or related environments is expected.

The Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) is responsible for implementing the company’s efforts in the following areas: Safety Management Systems, Risk Management and Loss Reductions, Safety Audits, and Safety Training.

Reports to: Director of Corporate Safety and works closely with the Assistant Director of Corporate Safety, the Director of Field Operations, Superintendents, Project Executives and Project Managers to assure that the company’s safety policies and procedures are implemented.

Requirements

  • Required Education
    • HS Diploma
  • Preferred Education
    • A degree in Safety and Health or related field is preferred.
  • Required Experience
    • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in applying safety standards, regulations and procedures as it relates to manuals, audits, reports, checklists, etc. for a general contractor, subcontractor, or related engineering or environmental health and safety consulting firm.
    • Previous experience working within the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, USACE EM385-1-1 Safety & Health Standards, and other federal, state, local or special customer regulations that govern building construction and safety requirements.
  • Required Qualifications
    • Must have a current OSHA 30-hour and First Aid & CPR card.
    • Highly preferred to have a current certification for one or more of the following - OSHA 510, OSHA 500.
    • Highly preferred to have Competent Person Training (CPT) in fall protection, confined space, scaffolding, excavation and Silica.
    • Current attendance certifications for one or more of the following - USACE EM385-1-1, USACE Quality Control Management (QCM), Maryland Sediment and Erosion Control, Asbestos Supervisor and/or Lead Supervisor.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Havingoneormoreofthefollowingsafetyandhealthrelatedcredentialsispreferred –STSC,CHST, OHST, ASP, GSP, CSP or similar.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Musthavetheknowledgeandknowthedetailsrelatedtoconstructionandoccupationalhealthand safety.
  • Security Clearance
    • PossessionofacurrentSecretorTop-Secretclearanceishighlypreferredorwiththecapabilityandgood personal history required to obtain a Top-Secret clearance

    • Develop and/orreviewandprovidecommentstoactivityspecificworkplans and AHA's
    • Supportimplementationofthe safety incentiveand safety awardsprograms
  • Risk Management and Loss Reduction
    • Provide field observations and suggestions regarding opportunities to prevent injuriesand accidents,improvesafetyperformance,and lowerinsurancecosts
    • Assistwithclaims handling andtheirresolutionas applicable
    • Assistwithinjuriesandperformaccidentinvestigations,obtainwitness statements, and develop related reports
    • Assistinreturningandmonitoringtheprogressofinjuredemployeesasthey perform modified duty on our projects
    • Implementrecordkeepingrequirements(e.g.,Accidentinvestigationreports, OSHA 300, 300A and 301 logs, Workers' Compensation reports, etc.)
    • ReviewandconfirmcurrentinsurancecertificatesforSubcontractorsintended to and/or currently working on our projects to assure compliance
  • Safety Audits
    • Conductassignedsafetyauditsinpartnershipwiththeprojectteamsand subcontractor safety representatives
    • Provide assistance, immediate input, advice and direction to resolve and mitigatepotentialhazardousconditionsandassurecompliancewithOSHAand other regulatory requirements (e.g., signs, permits, postings, etc.)
    • DevelopanddistributedailyProcoresafetyreportsoffieldauditobservations after completion of the project safety audit and provide the appropriate corrective action information
    • Assisttheprojectsupervisoryteamtoreviewupcomingworkareastopreplan and determine if unidentified safety concerns need to be addressed before work begins
    • Follow-up with subcontractor safety representatives to assure that all resolutionactionshavebeentaken,issueshavebeenaddressedandresolved, and promptly closed out on the Procore audit program
    • AssistinOSHAproject inspections
    • Assurethat project safety files&logs are maintained and kept up to date
    • SupervisetheimplementationofSafetyDataSheet's(SDS's)andtherelated communication program
    • Assurethatallsafetysignsandsafetyequipmentare adequatelysuppliedto assigned project sites
    • Provideassistance,supportandtechnicaladvicetoprojectsupervisoryteam and our subcontractors on all safety matters
    • Assistwiththeannualrespiratoryprotectionprogramdocumentationandfit testing duties as needed
  • Safety Training
    • Providesafety-trainingwhen necessary
    • Assistinschedulingand logisticsforspecific training programs
    • Perform jobsiteemployeetrainingasneeded
    • Attendand assistduringweeklyGrunleyandSubcontractorForeman meetings, scheduled safety meetings, and preparatory meetings as needed and/or as requested
