Job description

Mission of the Role (What you’ll be doing):

The Safety Manager is responsible for leading the workplace safety programs. This role partners closely with plant leadership, supervisors, Human Resources, and employees to identify and reduce risk, maintain compliance, and strengthen a proactive, people-first safety culture.

This is a visible, hands-on role for a safety leader who is comfortable spending significant time on the production floor, coaching employees and leaders, and converting observations, incidents, and safety data into sustainable corrective actions. The Safety Manager will help ensure a safe, compliant, and continuously improving environment within a fast-paced corrugated packaging and converting operation.

Key Duties & Accountabilities (Primary responsibilities & quantifiable measurements):

  • Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve site safety and environmental policies, programs, procedures, and work practices.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements, including OSHA and safety and environmental regulations, as well as SupplyOne policies and standards.
  • Maintain a strong presence on the production floor; conduct routine inspections, safety observations, audits, and job hazard analyses to identify risks and verify safe work practices.
  • Lead incident, injury, near-miss, and property-damage investigations; facilitate root-cause analysis and ensure corrective and preventive actions are assigned, tracked, and completed.
  • Own required OSHA recordkeeping and safety documentation, including injury and illness logs, training records, inspection reports, corrective-action records, and regulatory submissions.
  • Develop and deliver effective safety orientation and ongoing training for employees, supervisors, contractors, and temporary workers; verify understanding and application on the floor.
  • Partner with Operations and Maintenance on machine guarding, lockout/tagout, powered industrial trucks, ergonomics, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, and other high-risk manufacturing programs.
  • Support management-of-change and pre-startup safety reviews for new equipment, processes, facility changes, and capital projects.
  • Track, analyze, and communicate leading and lagging safety indicators; recommend actions that reduce risk, improve accountability, and strengthen site performance.
  • Coordinate workers’ compensation activity with Human Resources and applicable partners, including timely reporting, claim follow-up, return-to-work support, and identification of loss-prevention opportunities.
  • Lead emergency response planning, drills, and preparedness activities, including coordination with local emergency responders when appropriate.
  • Chair or support the site safety committee and engage employees at all levels through safety communications, observations, recognition, coaching, and follow-through.
  • Serve as the site contact for regulatory inspections and safety-related audits; coordinate responses, documentation, corrective actions, and closure of findings.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes and industry best practices and complete other safety-related duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications (What you’ll need to be successful):

  • 5+ years of progressive safety experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment, including experience owning or leading site safety programs.
  • Experience in corrugated packaging, paper, converting, printing, or a related manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations, incident investigation, workers’ compensation, and industrial safety programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with machine safety, lockout/tagout, powered industrial trucks, hazard communication, ergonomics, and emergency preparedness.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification is strongly preferred; CSP, ASP, or other recognized safety certification is a plus.
  • Proven ability to influence behavior, coach leaders and employees, and drive corrective actions without relying solely on positional authority.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, analytical, problem‑solving, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn and use safety, HR, and reporting systems.
  • Ability to work on‑site in a manufacturing environment and adjust schedule when needed to support multiple shifts, incident response, training, or operational needs.
