A Day in the Life of the Construction Safety Manager

As the Construction Safety Manager, you'll be the on-site health, safety, and environmental (HSE) expert for a large commercial steel construction project, working closely with project managers, superintendents, and foremen. Your days will include conducting field safety audits, leading safety orientations and training, reviewing job hazard analyses, and responding to incidents with investigation and root cause analysis. Reporting to the President of Construction, you'll play a key role in promoting the company's Zero Harm safety culture and keeping the project in compliance with company, federal, and state safety standards.

Responsibilities include:

• Serve as the dedicated safety and risk expert for company personnel, vendors, and subcontractors on an assigned construction jobsite
• Develop, implement, and monitor the project safety program, tracking HSE actions and site conditions
• Partner with the project management team to create site-specific safety plans and integrate safety into every project activity
• Conduct safety orientations for every new employee on the jobsite and coordinate safety training seminars
• Perform administrative and field safety audits, documenting site conditions through photos, spreadsheets, and written reports
• Review safety infractions and improvements with the project management team and track progress electronically
• Respond to safety incidents and accidents and lead accident investigations and root cause analysis
• Review job hazard analysis (JHA) and pre-task planning documents for all scopes of work
• Compile information and data for job activity hazard analyses
• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, company, and project safety standards, including OSHA regulations
• Follow up on workplace injuries associated with the project
• Help implement new and additional safety programs as directed by corporate HSE leadership
• Address safety concerns and risk issues promptly as the project progresses

Requirements and Qualifications:

• 3+ years of construction safety experience
• Commercial Construction Safety Experience: Must be a true safety manager on large-scale commercial projects
• Managing Claims: Handles injury claims on site, including taking injured workers to the clinic and building a relationship with the healthcare provider. Those relationships help get employees cleared to return with restrictions, which keeps cases less serious for the employer and insurer.
• Ability to train and communicate effectively: Strong oral and written communication.
• Present to large groups, including upper management/executive level
• Able to draft reports and manage complex documentation: Microsoft projects involve an enormous amount of paperwork and forms, so strong organization is essential.
• Ability to build relationships with the crews: Crews often view safety as the employer's way of saving money. The client wants a person who comes across as genuinely caring that everyone goes home safe.
• Firm but Fair: Not overly harsh, but confident enough to hold crews accountable, including when someone pushes back.
