The Oregon Department of Administrative Services (DAS) seeks a Safety Manager to lead the Safety & Wellness Program, acting as the agency's health, safety, and loss prevention expert. You will guide safety initiatives, conduct inspections, and drive policy improvements across the organization.

Ideal candidates bring a degree in safety or related field, several years of OH&S experience, and a proven ability to train and influence across diverse teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field with experience in workers' compensation loss prevention or occupational health and safety.
  • OR five years of OH&S consultation work in industrial/government settings or loss prevention.
  • Experience developing health and safety education programs and procedures.
  • Experience coaching or training employees to meet safety goals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build relationships across diverse backgrounds and roles.
  • Proficiency with common software and ability to learn new systems.
  • Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and take action.

What You Will Do

As the DAS Safety Manager, you will manage all aspects of our Safety and Wellness Program and serve as our agency’s primary expert on health, safety, and loss prevention.

Typical duties:
  • Lead and strengthen agency-wide safety and wellness programs through consultation, data analysis, and strategic planning
  • Conduct inspections, audits, ergonomic evaluations, and incident investigations
  • Provide expert guidance on safety regulations, policies, and Workers’ Compensation matters
  • Coordinate DAS Safety & Wellness Committees and ensure accessible, effective safety training
  • Represent DAS in statewide wellness efforts and manage the DAS Wellness Plan
  • Partner with DAS Risk, SAIF, and leaders on injury reviews, claims monitoring, and employee recovery support
  • Support continuous safety improvements through policy development and best practices
What We Are Looking For

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field; and two years of experience in Workers' Compensation insurance loss prevention or as an occupational health and safety representative in an industrial, manufacturing, government, utilities, institutional, or agricultural setting

OR

Five years of experience in Occupational Health and Safety consultation work in an industrial, manufacturing, government, utilities, institutional, or agricultural setting or in Workers' Compensation insurance loss prevention.

  • Experience developing, advising on, or evaluating employee health and safety education programs and procedures
  • Experience motivating, coaching, or training employees to meet safety and risk management goals
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear correspondence and reports
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and roles
  • Experience representing an organization in a professional manner with employees, customers, the public, or other jurisdictions
  • Proficiency using common software applications and the ability to learn new systems
  • Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and take appropriate action

  • This recruitment is for 1 permanent, full-time, Safety Specialist 2 (management, non-supervisory) position, and may be used to fill future vacancies.

  • *The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary range will reflect the additional 6.95%.
