Job summary

Shawmut Design and Construction is seeking an experienced construction safety professional to lead safety programs on Los Angeles projects. You will collaborate with superintendents and subcontractors to set expectations, identify risks, and train teams to ensure a safe work environment.

The role requires 5+ years of safety experience, OSHA 30-Hour certification, and knowledge of fall protection, confined spaces, and regulatory requirements. BCSP credentials are a plus.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of construction safety experience.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification.
  • Proficient in fall protection, confined space, excavation and trenching.
  • CPR and Basic First Aid certification.
  • Broad understanding of federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) certification preferred (CHST/ASP/CSP).

Responsibilities

  • Set safety expectations and provide structure around site safety with superintendent and subcontractors.
  • Identify strengths/weaknesses of superintendents and tailor site-specific safety programs.
  • Ensure safety training and development of Shawmut staff and subcontractors to understand risks and mitigation.
  • Raise hazard awareness with owners and review risk reduction steps.
  • Conduct regular safety audits throughout project duration and address issues with the project team.
  • Communicate safety expectations with subcontractors and Shawmut leadership.
  • Track and improve performance of subs by reviewing past performance and planning improvements.
  • Maintain IT/systems to capture data, present reporting, and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities
  • Set expectations and provide structure around site safety with superintendent and subcontractors
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses of superintendent around knowledge, create site specific programs when necessary and train accordingly
  • Ensure the safety, training and development of Shawmut staff and subcontractors to understand identify and reduce risks in a fast paced construction environment from pre-construction through close-out
  • Raise awareness of potential hazards that exist on a jobsite with owner by reviewing what can be done to minimize risk
  • Conduct regular safety audits throughout the duration of a project assessing all safety related issues and follow up with the project team
  • Communicate directly with subcontractors to discuss concerns and Shawmut's expectations
  • Identify poor performing subs by reviewing past performance and work with project executives and project managers to establish a plan to improve
  • Maintain the information technology and systems that are essential to capture and analyze key data, present reporting and communicate effectively
  • Develop and maintaining strong relationships with every member of the project team, subcontractors and clients
  • Raise awareness of potential hazards that exist in the new building with Owner by reviewing with him/her what the hazards are and what can be done to minimize/prevent them
  • Conduct new hire safety orientations for incoming construction operations staff
  • Train Shawmut staff and subcontractors on topics such as OSHA certification (10 & 30 hour), First Aid, construction specific requirements and new standards review
Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of construction safety experience
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification
  • Demonstrated competency in:
    • Fall Protection
    • Confined Space
    • Excavation and Trenching
    • Accident Investigation
    • Hazard Analysis
  • Broad understanding of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
  • Current CPR and Basic First Aid certification
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) certification (CHST, ASP, CSP, etc.)
    • OSHA 500 Authorized Trainer

Salary Range Information

Los Angeles Base Salary Range: $100,000 – $130,000 The range stated is specific to Los Angeles. Placement within the listed range depends on many factors including, but not limited to, years of experience, project size capability (for Construction & Field roles), and internal company equity.
