The Safety Lead - Bus Vehicle Maintenance is responsible for investigating all incidents involving vehicle maintenance, such as major events and near misses that may involve employee injuries, infrastructure damage, derailments, or service interruptions. The role includes responding to incidents, gathering documentation, reporting, identifying root causes, and collaborating with the Vehicle Maintenance Department to recommend corrective actions to enhance safety policies and procedures.
The Safety Lead will work closely with the Vehicle Maintenance Department to track safety recommendations, support the implementation of MBTA Safety Programs in compliance with OSHA Standards, and assist with safety audits. Staying updated on new safety laws and regulations and recommending necessary changes to MBTA Safety management is also essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in implementing Safety Management Systems (SMS) across MBTA, supporting safety policies, risk management, assurance activities, and safety promotion.
- Respond to incidents, gather evidence, and report to relevant parties promptly.
- Coordinate with departments to collect information for incident investigations.
- Conduct root cause analyses and recommend feasible corrective actions.
- Track and ensure closure of safety recommendations and corrective actions.
- Perform scheduled and unscheduled inspections and audits to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Develop and update safety policies, interpret industry standards, and provide safety support and training.
- Conduct safety inspections, hazard assessments, and prepare reports for stakeholders.
- Assist during audits and investigations, and perform Job Hazard Analyses.
- Review vehicle maintenance injury data to identify trends and mitigation strategies.
- Collaborate with external agencies like the DPU and cross-functional teams on safety issues.
- Maintain safety data reports, support safety projects, and participate in safety initiatives.
- Investigate safety concerns from various sources and recommend corrective actions.
- Drive company or personal vehicle for site visits and emergency response.
- Respond to emergencies and abnormal conditions 24/7.
- Adhere to all relevant policies, regulations, and collective bargaining agreements.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Supervision
- No direct reports; provides safety advice to staff at various levels.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Six (6) years in vehicle maintenance, manufacturing, or testing.
- One (1) year of supervisory or leadership experience.
- Valid CDL Class B with passenger/air brake endorsements and Class D driver’s license.
- Experience in safety hazard assessment and mitigation.
- Knowledge of vehicle maintenance standards, codes, and regulations.
- Experience with safety programs, incident response, and investigations.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and multitasking skills.
- Knowledge of 49 CFR Parts 659/672/673/674.
- Ability to complete safety training programs within specified timelines.
- Ability to work any shift, including weekends, and respond to emergencies at any time.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Additional education or certifications can substitute for experience as specified.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Knowledge of CAD, databases, or mainframe applications.
- Master’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience with vehicle procurement, safety testing, or safety training development.
- Knowledge of SMS, hazard analysis, OSHA standards, and safety certifications.
- Completion of TSI courses preferred.
