Job description

Safety Engineer

PBF Energy Inc. (NYSE: PBF) is one of the largest independent refiners in North America, operating oil refineries through its subsidiaries. We are seeking a talented Safety Professional to join our team at the Martinez Refinery in California as a pivotal member of the Safety team.

The Safety Engineer reports to the Safety Manager and is responsible for leading the incident investigation work process as the site focal point and supporting personal safety evaluations to ensure the safety of employees, the environment, and the community. Successful candidates will use safety data and metrics to drive the site toward eliminating personal safety impacts and incidents.

Job Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance and continuous improvement with regulatory requirements (federal, state, and county), corporate standards, and industry best practices.
  • Interpret regulations and standards.
  • Develop and improve site safety programs.
  • Develop training materials for site employees and contractors.
  • Participate in training of employees.
  • Coach operations and maintenance employees and maintenance contractors.
  • Audit implementation of safety programs.
  • Investigate incidents and near misses.
  • Develop and implement KPIs to track effectiveness of safety programs.
  • Participate in safety programs and assist with department responsibilities, core regulatory safety programs including personal safety, permit to work, intrusive work, energy isolation, hot work, and confined space entry; contractor safety programs; turnaround safety programs; other safety programs including Goal Zero, safety observations, hazard recognition audits, permit to work audits, recognition programs, Joint Health & Safety Committee.
  • Require significant field presence; provide observation, coaching, guidance, and auditing.
  • Facilitate personal safety incident/case management, lead and support incident investigations certified in ABS Causal Analysis and Triangle of Prevention (TOP).
  • Assist Industrial Hygienist to resolve health issues by identifying risks and implementing mitigating policies and programs.
  • Work with internal customers on incident investigations and prevention and corrective actions; interpret safety data and metrics; influence change; communicate with site leadership; provide consultation and mentoring; present findings to leaders.
Position Specific Requirements
  • Mix of computer-based office work and field inspection and testing in refinery plant units.
  • Physical requirements: climb ladders, walk up and down steps, lift 50 pounds.
  • Work conditions: at heights; outside in inclement weather.
  • Work schedule: available off hours and days to respond to refinery issues or emergencies, including on-call emergency response; occasional altered schedule during maintenance outages and turnarounds.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have active TWIC card or be able to obtain one.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Occupational Safety, or related field.
  • 5-10 years of relevant field training/experience in a safety-related role.

Martinez Refining Company LLC, a PBF Energy Subsidiary, offers highly competitive total compensation and benefits packages. The salary range for this position is $92,846.05 - $164,756.20.
