Job summary

Alpha Baking Co., Inc. in Indiana is seeking a Safety Specialist to monitor production operations for OSHA/EPA compliance, conduct inspections, and lead incident investigations.

The role requires on-floor presence and coordination of training programs across shifts to maintain a safe working environment. You will prepare reports and documentation, participate in the Safety Committee, and collaborate with maintenance and supervision to implement improvements and drills.

Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • 1–3 years of manufacturing safety experience.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA General Industry standards.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Requires ≥50% production floor presence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety management systems.
  • Certifications such as OSHA 30, First Aid/CPR, CSP preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor daily manufacturing operations for OSHA, EPA, and company safety standards compliance.
  • Conduct regular plant safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across all shifts.
  • Investigate workplace incidents, near misses, and hazards; prepare reports and corrective actions.
  • Schedule and coordinate annual safety training and emergency drills.
  • Deliver training on health and safety topics and accident prevention for staff and supervisors.
  • Provide training on lockout/tagout, machine guarding, PPE, and emergency response.
  • Maintain safety documentation including SDS records and compliance logs.
  • Assist ergonomic improvements and industrial hygiene practices.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and maintenance for safe equipment operation and PM schedules.
  • Participate in Safety Committee and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Advise on noise levels, PPE compliance, and best practices.
  • Inspect premises/work practices to identify issues or non-conformity.
  • Stop unsafe acts or processes.
  • Travel occasionally to other sites or training locations.
  • Location: home base at Chicagoland locations with regular travel.
  • Flexible to work across shifts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

  • Schedule and coordinate annual safety training programs and emergency drills for all employees.
  • Conduct training sessions and presentations on health and safety topics and accident prevention for employees and supervisors.
  • Deliver safety training on topics such as lockout/tagout, machine guarding, PPE usage, and emergency response.
  • Maintain accurate safety documentation, including SDS records and compliance logs.
  • Assist in implementing ergonomic improvements and industrial hygiene practices.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and maintenance teams to ensure safe equipment operation and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Safety Committee: Actively participate in the company Safety Committee, providing input on safety initiatives and continuous improvement projects.
  • Advising and instructing on various safety-related topics (e.g., noise levels, proper use of machinery, PPE compliance).
  • Inspect premises and personnel work practices to identify issues or non-conformity (e.g., not using protective equipment).
  • Stop any unsafe acts or processes that appear dangerous or unhealthy.
  • Travel: Occasional overnight travel to other company sites or training locations may be required.
  • Location: Position will have a home base at one of our Chicagoland locations with regular (daily/weekly) travel to all Chicagoland locations.
  • Shifts: Must be flexible to work with teams on different shifts (day, evening, or weekend) as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Engineering, or related field (preferred).
  • 1–3 years of experience in safety roles within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA standards, machine safety, and hazard control methods.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to identify hazards before they become issues.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Requires having a strong presence on the production floor (minimum 50% time on production floor) and interacting with all levels of staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety management systems.
  • Preferred Certifications:
    • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry
    • First Aid/CPR
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar
