Job summary

Sonoco Columbia, SC facility is seeking a Safety Coordinator to lead safety programs, promote regulatory compliance, and partner with operations to embed safe practices daily.

The role requires hands-on engagement, strong communication, and a commitment to reducing incidents while maintaining safety standards across the site.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety programs.
  • Experience building and maintaining a safety program in manufacturing.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English; Spanish helpful.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Promote continuous improvement of facility safety and health systems to reduce accidents and ensure compliance.
  • Lead, motivate and foster a safety-conscious culture with operations staff.
  • Coordinate day-to-day safety activities to meet federal, state, local and internal policies.
  • Keep safety programs up to date with corporate standards.
  • Conduct regulatory assessments to maintain compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Engage with employees to promote safety and accident prevention.
  • Perform compliance audits and safety inspections and initiate corrective actions.

Position: Safety Coordinator Location: Columbia, SC Recycling plant Pay Rate based on experience: $20.35-$24.88

This position will be ideal for a floor-oriented people person who knows safety, OSHA, etc., and enjoys working with people to make a safety program come alive. The right candidate will have been a part of a strong safety program and will have the ability to work with operations employees and managers. They will have the patience and commitment to work "hands on" to help the entire team understand the company's commitment to safety and the need to follow the safety programs.

What you will be doing:
  • He/she promotes the continuous improvement of facility safety and health systems to result in the reduction of accidents and illness, the assurance of regulatory compliance, and to make safe behaviors part of day-to-day thinking.
  • Safety Coordinator is responsible for helping to lead, motivate and foster a safety-conscious culture in the workplace to reduce accidents and injuries.
  • The Safety Coordinator is expected to coordinate and manage the day-to-day activities related to meeting all safety and health standards established by applicable regulation, as well as policies and procedures established internally.
  • He/she will keep the facility up to date on all safety programs established by the corporate safety team.

  • Interface daily with hourly and salaried employees to promote safety programs and accident prevention.
  • Conduct regular compliance audits and safety inspections of the facility and initiate corrective actions to eliminate hazards and promote a safe work environment.
Essential Abilities:
  • Responsible for regulatory assessments and efforts to maintain compliance with Federal, State, and local health and safety regulations.
  • Interface daily with hourly and salaried employees to promote safety programs and accident prevention.
  • Conduct regular compliance audits and safety inspections of the facility and initiate corrective actions to eliminate hazards and promote a safe work environment.
  • Read, write and understand the English language; bilingual Spanish helpful.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health/Safety or related Science is preferred.
  • 2-4 years related safety work experience in manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State and local regulations and industry requirements.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
