Job Description - (RT) Respiratory Care Practitioner - Level I - Nights (2500017N)

Shift: 7p-7a

Department Summary:

Children's National Hospital is seeking dedicated Respiratory Care Practitioners to join our team at our 323-bed Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. Our Respiratory Department offers exciting growth opportunities through our career ladder program, allowing you to advance your career while working in various high-level care units. These include the Heart and Kidney Unit, Short Stay Unit, Medical Surgical Units, Level IV NICU, PICU, Cardiac ICU, Emergency Department, and critical care transport via ambulance and helicopter.

Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the department manager and according to departmental and hospital standards, the Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP-I) is responsible for administering all levels of Respiratory Care to treat patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction and/or disabilities. The RCP-I functions at a level customary for Acute Care and ER, maintaining skills and knowledge to provide safe, effective, and appropriate care to patients of all ages, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, and adults.

Qualifications:
  • Completion of a minimum of two years of college training in an AMA-approved Respiratory Care Program - Associates Degree (Required)
  • 1 year of work experience in Respiratory Care (Preferred)
Required Skills/Knowledge:
  • Competency in all aspects of acute care delivery and ER prior to completing 90 days
  • Ability to administer general Respiratory Therapy procedures, including humidity and aerosol therapy, lung inflation maneuvers, pulmonary secretion clearance, CPAP, BIPAP, and High-Flow Therapy
  • Basic mechanical ventilator management skills, including setup, monitoring, and troubleshooting
  • Performs CPR and invasive/non-invasive monitoring and diagnostic procedures as required
  • Works independently within the ER and all acute care areas
  • Adheres to policies and procedures established by Respiratory Care Services and Children’s National Health System
  • Effective organization, prioritization, and communication skills
  • Ability to perform under stressful situations with good clinical judgment
  • Compassionate and patient-centered approach
  • Mathematical skills for clinical calculations
  • Maintains skills and continuing education credits (BLS, PALS, FIT Testing, etc.)
  • Physical ability to perform treatments and lift up to 50 lbs; ability to stand and walk for long periods
  • Basic computer skills
Required Licenses and Certifications:
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • RCP License from District of Columbia DOH
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
