Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Facility Operations & Instrumentation: perform weekly/bi-weekly cryogen fills, troubleshoot issues, monitor helium recovery, manage gas cylinders, and maintain lab spaces.
  • Satellite Facility Support: travel to satellite locations for routine maintenance and on-site support of departmental instruments.
  • User Training & Support: orient and train new users, assist with setting up experiments on Bruker and Agilent/Varian consoles, support data processing and interpretation of multidimensional NMR data.
  • Administration: assist with user docs, billing logs, safety audits, and facility tours.

About the Job

Position Summary

The Minnesota NMR Center is seeking an Assistant NMR Manager to support the operation and maintenance of our multi-user core facility. The MNMR currently houses eight high-field spectrometers and provides critical technical support to over 30 research groups across the University. Additionally, MNMR staff support the operation of six additional NMR spectrometers in two other departments housed in four buildings across campus. This role is essential for maintaining facility uptime, training a diverse user base, and supporting satellite operations throughout the Twin Cities campus.

The Assistant Manager will be responsible for both solid-state and solution NMR instruments, acquiring and interpreting multidimensional spectra for internal and external users, and providing technical training and guidance to a diverse user base across 13 departments. The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in Chemistry or Biochemistry with a strong technical background in NMR spectroscopy and a proactive approach to facility management.

Anticipated Duties & Responsibilities

Facility Operations & Instrumentation (50% Effort)

Perform weekly/bi-weekly liquid nitrogen and liquid helium fills for eight primary spectrometers and six satellite magnets. Assist in troubleshooting routine hardware and software issues. Assist with monitoring and maintaining the helium recovery system and manage the logistics of compressed gas cylinder swaps. Help maintain wet lab supplies and ensure clean and safe lab environments.

Satellite Facility Support (30% Effort)

Travel to satellite locations (NHH, PWB, WDH, etc.) to perform routine maintenance and cryogen fills as part of the MNMR service agreement. Provide on-site technical support for departmental instruments managed by MNMR.

User Training & Support (15% Effort)

Perform orientation and basic training for new graduate students, postdocs, and PIs. Assist users with setting up specific experiments on both Bruker and Agilent/Varian consoles. Assist the Manager in processing routine samples for high-throughput screening and metabolomics studies. Provide assistance to internal and external users with experimental design, setup, data processing, and interpretation of multidimensional NMR data for biological, chemical, and materials science applications.

Administration (5% Effort)

Assist with user documentation, billing logs, housekeeping, facility tours, and safety compliance audits. Ensure a clean, safe, and organized facility, including the equipment repair room and computer labs.

Pay Range: $25.00 ($52,000) - $30.00 ($62,400); depending on education/qualifications/experience
