Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Manage facility operations for eight primary and six satellite spectrometers, including routine maintenance and troubleshooting (50% effort).
  • Perform routine maintenance at satellite locations to ensure uptime and support departmental instruments.
  • Provide orientation and training for new students/postdocs on Bruker and Agilent/Varian consoles, and assist with data processing and experimental design.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as documentation, safety audits, and inventory management (5% effort).

About the Job
Position Summary

The Minnesota NMR Center is seeking an Assistant NMR Manager tosupport the operation and maintenance of our multi-user corefacility. The MNMR currently houses eight high-field spectrometersand provides critical technical support to over 30 research groupsacross the University. Additionally, MNMR staff support theoperation of six additional NMR spectrometers in two otherdepartments housed in four buildings across campus. This role isessential for maintaining facility uptime, training a diverse userbase, and supporting satellite operations throughout the TwinCities campus.

Assistant Manager Responsibilities

The Assistant Manager will be responsible for both solid-state andsolution NMR instruments, acquiring and interpretingmultidimensional spectra for internal and external users, andproviding technical training and guidance to a diverse user baseacross 13 departments. The ideal candidate will possess a PhD inChemistry or Biochemistry with a strong technical background in NMRspectroscopy and a proactive approach to facility management.

Anticipated Duties & Responsibilities
  • Facility Operations & Instrumentation (50% Effort) Perform weekly/bi-weekly liquid nitrogen and liquid helium fillsfor eight primary spectrometers and six satellite magnets. Assistin troubleshooting routine hardware and software issues. Assistwith monitoring and maintaining the helium recovery system andmanage the logistics of compressed gas cylinder swaps. Helpmaintain wet lab supplies and ensure clean and safe labenvironments.
  • Satellite Facility Support (30% Effort) Travel to satellite locations (NHH, PWB, WDH, etc.) to performroutine maintenance and cryogen fills as part of the MNMR serviceagreement. Provide on-site technical support for departmentalinstruments managed by MNMR.
  • User Training & Support (15% Effort) Perform orientation and basic training for new graduate students,postdocs, and PIs. Assist users with setting up specificexperiments on both Bruker and Agilent/Varian consoles. Assist theManager in processing routine samples for high-throughput screeningand metabolomics studies. Provide assistance to internal andexternal users with experimental design, setup, data processing,and interpretation of multidimensional NMR data for biological,chemical, and materials science applications.
  • Administration (5% Effort) Assist with user documentation, billing logs, housekeeping, facility tours, and safety compliance audits. Ensure a clean, safe,and organized facility, including the equipment repair room andcomputer labs.

Pay Range: $25.00 ($52,000) - $30.00 ($62,400); depending oneducation/qualifications/experience
