Climbing Business Journal in New York, NY is seeking a routesetter to design engaging, accessible, and challenging boulder problems for climbers of all levels. You will work with the Head Routesetter in small teams to ensure consistent grading and efficient wall setup.

The role emphasizes hands-on wall maintenance, participation in events, and mentorship of apprentices within a collaborative environment that values community involvement and safety.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2–3 years of commercial routesetting experience.
  • At least 3 years of climbing experience (indoor and outdoor preferred).
  • Deep understanding of climbing technique, movement, and creative problem-solving.
  • Active involvement in the broader climbing community.

Responsibilities

  • Design engaging, accessible commercial boulder problems for climbers of varying experience levels.
  • Forerun and adjust routes collaboratively to maintain grading consistency.
  • Give and receive constructive feedback within a small, motivated team.
  • Mentor apprentices through the dedicated in-house apprenticeship program.
  • Support the Setter Support Crew with wall stripping, washing, and sorting holds.
  • Maintain climbing walls and volumes — including t-nut replacement, painting, and general repairs.
  • Manage daily risk in all climbing areas and keep workspaces organized.
  • Participate actively in competitions, events, and workshops.
