The Route Manager is responsible for exercising discretion and independent judgment to manage daily operations of the facility, including but not limited to personnel, production, safety, and customer service.

Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED, some college preferred
- Previous operations experience in the trash industry
- 3 or more years of prior management of people in a fast‑paced environment
- Valid CDL license with attached DOT Medical Card, preferred
Knowledge and Skills
- The ability to convey complex directions to employees
- Language skills include the ability to analyze and communicate effectively, including but not limited to the ability to compose concise procedures, memos, and letters
- Ability to speak and listen professionally, and to work with various people from diverse backgrounds
- Excellent computer skills necessary; Microsoft Excel and Word proficiency required
- Use of computer‑aided dispatching equipment required
- Advanced scheduling and dispatch experience required
- Reasoning ability
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to draft and carry out detailed instructions; identify and solve problems involving a variety of variables in random situations
Essential Job Duties
Drivers
- Exercise discretion in assigning and supervising CDL drivers operating solid waste collection equipment
- Monitor daily production
- Ensure all drivers perform and complete daily activities with routes professionally and timely
- Review safety protocols, such as missing logs/DMRs
- Review and verify Hours of Service for all drivers to ensure compliance with DOT regulations
- Manage random drug screens and monitor for reasonable suspicion
Operations
- Exercise independent judgment in monitoring the progress of daily operations and reallocating team members to accommodate business needs
- Conduct field inspections and audits of all site personnel to ensure proper work procedures are compliant with company and all applicable legal requirements
- Use discretion to address customer complaints in a timely manner and review with the General Manager
- Partner with the Marketing Manager and General Manager with residential contracts to ensure smooth contract start‑ups
- Partner with City Service Directors monthly to check service status
- Supervise dispatch team and/or dispatch drivers as needed
Safety
- Develop and execute safety goals
- Oversee compliance programs, including but not limited to environmental, DOT, and OSHA
- Perform audits to ensure compliance with company, DOT, and OSHA guidelines
- Promote and participate in company safety programs with all team members
- Oversee accident investigations
- Monitor pre‑ and post‑trip route observations completed weekly and monthly
- Oversee lock‑out/tag‑out procedures
- Attend monthly safety meetings
Routing
- Exercise independent judgment in optimizing daily refuse and recycling routes by working with the Routing Department, Route Supervisors, and Drivers to ensure effective and efficient routing of all routes
- Use discretion to adjust daily activities due to unforeseen incidents such as weather and/or personnel changes
Profitability
- Develop short and long‑term goals and action plans for the site and company
- Control costs by monitoring driver productivity and operational efficiencies
- Partner with the General Manager to develop yearly budget
Personnel
- Supervise operations employees directly and indirectly, with the assistance of the Operations Supervisor
- Ensure proper staffing, including assisting with new hires and terminations of existing employees
- Supervise employees to review and approve hours worked and vacation requests
- Review evaluations with employees and recommend promotions
- Exercise discretion to issue discipline, suspensions, and terminations of subordinate employees
- Make independent hiring decisions, including conducting interviews of applicants and reviewing resumes
- Independently exercise discretion in issuing rewards to subordinates for superior work performance, such as gift cards, recognition, and promotion recommendations
- Exercise independent judgment in transferring employees to different shifts and departments
- Prepare performance appraisals of subordinates and make recommendations for bonuses and raises
- Exercise discretion in assigning and transferring staff to various shifts and job assignments
- Exercise discretion in recalling, rehiring, and laying off employees
Maintenance
- Supply Maintenance Manager with Daily Route Matrix to ensure proper equipment needs are met daily
- Review routine repair schedules with Maintenance Manager
- Review DMRs with Maintenance Manager to ensure completion in a timely manner
- Partner with Maintenance Manager to review all DMRs and completed repairs for proper and efficient completion
- Administer and monitor audit program for weekly fleet inspections
Training
- Partner with General Manager to develop training programs for the team
- Coach, develop, and educate supervisors
- Ensure training programs are administered to new and existing team members to reduce turnover, maintenance costs, and accidents
