Job summary

Georgetown University seeks a skilled roofer/sheet metal worker to maintain and repair diverse roofing systems across campus. You will fabricate and install metal components, respond to service requests, and perform preventive maintenance under supervision in Facilities Management.

Experience with slate roofs, sheet metal fabrication, and a completed roofing apprenticeship are required; a valid DC/MD/VA driver’s license is also essential. On-campus role with comprehensive Georgetown benefits.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Five years’ experience with residential and commercial roofing systems, including slate.
  • Five years’ experience fabricating/instaling sheet metal for ductwork and gutters.
  • Completion of apprenticeship or equivalent roofing-trade training.
  • Must hold valid DC, MD or VA driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair all types of roofs (slate, tin, copper, hot tar, rubber, shingle).
  • Fabricate and install sheet metal components (duct work, gutters, louvers, drip pans).
  • Perform journey-level maintenance and respond to service requests and preventive maintenance.
  • Operate high-reach machines and observe safety rules.

This position maintains and repairs all types of roofs as part of the services provided to the University community by the facilities management area to maintain university buildings. Work includes maintenance and repair of slate, tin, copper, hot tar, rubber and shingle roofs; gutters and downspouts and sheet metal work. Lays out and fabricates of duct lines, drip pans, metal louvers, etc. from flat sheet metal. Fabricates and installs items made of special metals such as ornaments, murals and cornice work. Perform journey level maintenance and repairs in accordance with industry/trade practices. Performs assignments in response to requests for service, scheduled preventive maintenance inspections and unscheduled or special projects. Incumbents use all standard tools, equipment, materials and supplies of the trade and observe all safety rules, regulations and precautions in performing duties. Operates various high reach machines.

This position reports directly to the Building and Structures Supervisor along with one other roofer/sheet metal worker, 3 locksmiths, 3 carpenters, one mason and a trades helper. Incumbent will work with tradesmen of other areas within the department to complete assigned tasks as necessary. The work performed provides a direct service to the department to ensure a comfortable, safe and clean environment in which the University can live, learn and work.

Work Interactions

Incumbent works with other members of the Facilities Management area and the university faculty, staff and students as work is performed on campus facilities. Cooperative and collaborative work with fellow employees assures that work can be completed on time and within specified guidelines.

Requirements And Qualifications
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Five years experience working with residential and commercial roofing systems to include slate roofs
  • Five years experience fabricating and installing all types of sheet meal to include duct work, metal louvers, drip pans, guttering and down spouts
  • General knowledge of soldering and welding.
  • Completion of apprenticeship or equivalent training in the roofing trade required
  • Must have valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia driver’s license
  • Basic computer literacy and working knowledge of Windows 95 preferred
