Job summary

SEPTA is seeking a skilled roofing and general maintenance worker to inspect and repair roofs, install waterproofing, and perform related carpentry, masonry and finish work. The role requires flexibility for storm response, ladder/scaffolding setup and adherence to safety policies.

The incumbent will install gutters, flashing, skylights, and roofing components, while ensuring quality workmanship and compliance with all departmental procedures and safety requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or equivalent and CDL.
  • Must complete 1st Class Roofer qualifications test and performance test.
  • Work may occur in storms, bent/stooped positions and near high voltage; PPE required.

Responsibilities

  • Clears roofs of debris and performs general housekeeping on roof.
  • Repairs or replaces strainers, cleans drain obstructions and inspects wear.
  • Performs carpentry, masonry, painting and roof-related finish work.
  • Erects ladders, scaffolding, staging and rigging as needed.
  • Installs waterproofing on foundations, skylights, vents and gutters.
  • Fabricates and installs metal flashing, capping, and roof components.
  • Complies with safety policies and reports hazards.

Job description

Overall Description

Inspects, clears foreign objects and debris, waterproofs, repairs, replaces roofs, siding, gutters, drains, downspouts, metal capping and associated areas. Assembles scaffolding, performs carpentry, blacksmithing, painting, finish work and masonry tasks associated with roofing functions.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Clears roofs of all foreign objects and debris
  • Performs general housekeeping and maintenance work on roof.
  • Repairs or replaces strainers and clean drain obstructions.
  • Inspects roofs for excessive wear and makes all necessary repairs for blistering and other faults.
  • Performs carpentry, blacksmithing and masonry work related to the installation or repair of roofs
  • Operates roofer kettles and handles hot roofing materials of all types.
  • Helps erect ladders, scaffolding, staging and rigging of all types.
  • Lays out and organizes all work including quantity estimates and bills of materials. Repairs and performs sanding, painting and touch-up functions related to roof work.
  • Installs waterproofing on foundation slabs, footings and foundation walls.
  • Installs skylights, roof access doors and hatches.
  • Fabricates and installs metal flashing and counter flashing.
  • Fabricates and installs pitch boxes, drains, vents, gutters and downspouts.
  • Installs vinyl and aluminum siding.
  • Fabricates and installs metal capping for windows, doors, skylights, and roof hatches.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.
Additional Specific Responsibilities
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or equivalent. Will be required to obtain CDL license.
  • Must successfully complete 1st Class Roofer qualifications test and performance test as required.
  • Subject to calls during storms and emergencies. May work in stooped, bent, cramped position and from ladders, scaffolding, etc. May work in close proximity to high voltage and moving vehicles.
  • Works with various chemicals. Uses personal protective equipment furnished. Completes all SEPTA or manufacturers courses as required.
