Job summary

NC State University in Raleigh, NC is seeking a skilled Roofer to lead the maintenance and installation of campus roofing systems. You will supervise a 2–5 person crew of trades workers, maintenance mechanics, and helpers, ensuring high-quality workmanship across university buildings.

The role covers inspection, repair, waterproofing both above and below grade, and coordination with other shops. You will perform journeyman tasks, review plans, and uphold safety and proper waste disposal

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalency.
• Journeyman-level roofing experience preferred.
• Experience leading a small crew (2–5 people).
• Knowledge of multiple roofing systems and waterproofing.

Responsibilities

• Lead a small crew inspecting, maintaining, and repairing roofs across campus.
• Perform journeyman-level patching and roof replacement.
• Execute preventive maintenance for building envelopes and waterproofing.
• Repair or replace roofing systems (single-ply, BUR, modified bitumen, metal, slate, shingles).
• Perform above- and below-grade waterproofing and resealing.
• Review plans, estimates, and on-site conditions; adjust as needed.
• Develop and prioritize work assignments; coordinate with colleagues and other shops.
• Communicate technical and safety information to crew members.

Job description

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Roofer to join our Facilities Division team. In this role, you will provide high-quality and responsive service in the maintenance, repair, and installation of campus building envelopes, including all roofs and above/below grade waterproofing. As a crew leader, you will oversee a team of 2-5 employees consisting of trades workers, maintenance mechanics, and helpers. This position offers a dynamic environment where teamwork and collaboration are key to success. You will have the opportunity to apply your expertise in various roofing systems while working in a supportive, professional setting dedicated to maintaining the university’s infrastructure at the highest standards. This position is perfect for someone with solid roofing experience who enjoys leading a team, working in a collaborative environment, and contributing to the upkeep and beautification of a thriving campus community.

Key responsibilities and duties include but not limited to:

• Lead a small crew in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing roofs, ensuring quality work across campus
• Perform journeyman-level tasks, including patching and replacing roofs using hot or cold methods, and ensure that work meets the required standards
• Execute preventive maintenance and repairs for the campus’s building envelope, including all roofs and waterproofing above and below grade
• Repair or replace roofing systems such as single-ply, BUR , modified bitumen, metal, slate, and shingle roofing, using the appropriate tools and materials
• Perform above and below grade waterproofing, including resealing windows, repairing control joints, and applying waterproofing membranes
• Review plans, estimates, and on-site conditions, making necessary adjustments to ensure project success
• Develop and prioritize work assignments, coordinating tasks with co-workers and other shops as needed
• Communicate technical and safety information to crew members, ensuring the correct assembly, demolition, and waste disposal practices
• Establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, contractors, vendors, and other university personnel to ensure effective project completion
• This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule
• This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor
• This position will assist other trades whenever necessary

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

• Extensive experience in the maintenance and repair of commercial roofing systems and waterproofing foundations
