Job description

At Western States Metal Roofing, we rely on skilled roll-form operators. As a Roll Forming Machine Operator, your daily duties typically include setting up and adjusting the roll forming equipment, monitoring production runs to ensure specifications are met and inspecting finished products for quality. You'll also be responsible for performing routine maintenance on the machines and reporting any malfunctions or safety concerns to supervisors. This hands‑on role requires a focus on safety, quality, and teamwork throughout each shift. This job involves performing setup work to ensure all materials are where they should be, scanning work orders and allocating materials controlling inventory, printing and checking the label of each material to be sure it's correct using RF Scanners, help stack products after you process them, and otherwise ensuring the roll forming machine continues to operate as intended. Clean the machine, add or switch lubricants, check tooling and hardware for wear and tear, do tool changes as needed, lift up to 35 pounds, and help other employees. Production team support on‑time orders and steady production flow. The ideal candidate is quite knowledgeable with metal roofing and siding, safety‑minded, detail‑oriented, and comfortable in a fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities and occasional overtime.

Safety and Compliance:
  • Perform pre‑shift equipment inspections and complete required daily checks.
  • Follow company policies, facility rules, and legal safety guidelines always.
  • Maintain safe work areas, clear visibility, and proper use required of PPE.
  • All safety devices must be in place for machine operations and in working order.
  • Immediately report hazards, near misses, and equipment defects.
  • Report any unsafe or improper use of machinery, forklifts, or materials to upper management.
Material Handling and Equipment Operation:
  • Operate sit‑down and stand‑up forklifts to move goods between receiving, storage, production, and shipping areas.
  • Load and unload heavy steel coils or metal strips using cranes, hoists, or forklifts.
  • Configure roll forming lines, align dies, and adjust roll pressures based on material thickness, work orders and blueprints.
  • Inspect finished parts using precision tools like micrometers, calipers, and tape measures to verify dimensions, lengths, widths, coverages, and quantities.
  • Use of RF scanner for inventory control and allocations per company policies and create labels per instructions.
  • Stack, bundle materials and move materials to packaging. Keep the flow moving.
  • Report any issues with materials or machines immediately to management.
Inventory Control and Documentation:
  • Verify, label, scan, and track inventory using RF scanners and/or a warehouse management system (WMS).
  • Complete basic Work Orders per production run as directed.
  • Support put‑away, by scanning out products, weighing to verify product returns are correct, tag and wrap, return unused products to correct staging area.
  • Rotate stock using FIFO and assist with cycle counts and inventory audits.
  • Report shortages, damage, or quality issues to supervisors and Quality Assurance.
Maintenance and Housekeeping:
  • Conduct basic cleaning and minor upkeep of machine, forklifts and tools; check batteries, fuel, and fluid levels. Calibrate tape measures and calipers per ICC Regulations.
  • Document and elevate mechanical issues for repair; remove unsafe equipment from service.
  • Maintain cleanliness of entire work zones.
  • Keep all pallets, wood and packaging in proper order.
  • Keep equipment clean and free of debris.
Production and Cross‑Functional Support:
  • Coordinate material flow with Shipping/Receiving, Warehouse, and Production teams.
  • Align machine activities to production schedules.
  • Assist with warehouse operations and yard organization as assigned.
  • Weigh and record product weights; verify counts and packaging integrity.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent;
  • 2+ years of Experience with prior hands‑on experience in metal fabrication, manufacturing, or operating Roll forming machinery.
  • Familiarity with RF scanners/WMS and basic paperwork.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
Preferred
  • Experience in roofing, building materials, manufacturing, or distribution.
  • Strong hand-eye coordination, attention to detail, and safety‑first mindset.
  • Effective communication; able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move packages as required by the role.
  • Ability to work around moving equipment; may include hot and cold environments. Prolonged periods outdoors.
