Job summary

The University of Chicago’s Animal Resources Center (ARC) Special Services unit is seeking a Special Services Technician to provide technical and operational support for animal research. This hands-on role covers rodent colony management, Transnetyx sample collection, and maintaining supplies and equipment under supervision.

You will perform experimental procedures with research animals, help develop standard operating procedures for new technologies, and prepare study documentation.

Qualifications

• Vocational training or equivalent experience in related field.
• 2–5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
• AALAS certification at any level.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or 3 years rodent husbandry in academia.

Responsibilities

• Performs experimental procedures with research animals alongside investigative staff.
• Assists in rodent colony management (breeding, weaning) in animal facilities.
• Maintains inventory and orders for specialized supplies and equipment.
• Coordinates weekly Transnetyx sample collection and shipment.
• Helps develop SOPs for new technologies with the program supervisor.
• Prepares study documentation such as protocol worksheets and progress reports.
• Implements quality and safety control measures in the laboratory.
• Performs other related work as needed.
