Job summary

Carnegie Mellon University’s National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) seeks a dynamic UI/UX Software Engineer to design and implement user interfaces for robotic systems. You will collaborate with robotics engineers, hardware teams, and end-users to create intuitive interfaces connected to real-time data streams, using Qt/QML bindings to C++ or Python backends.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Design, or equivalent practical experience with 1–3+ years software development experience.
  • Qt / QML proficiency: hands-on experience building modern user interfaces using QML/Qt.
  • Frontend-to-backend integration: connecting QML frontends to backends via signals/slots, PySide6/PyQt, or async data handlers.
  • User-centered mindset: translate user feedback and workflows into clear visual layouts.
  • Teamwork & communication: cross-functional teamwork and collaboration.
  • Core engineering standards: Git version control, clean code, peer reviews.
  • Adaptability: interest in hardware interaction and bridging operators with machines.

Responsibilities

  • Co-Design Human-Machine Interfaces with robotics engineers and operators.
  • Build native Qt/QML Frontends bound to C++ or Python data streams.
  • Prototype and test interfaces with real users for usability and safety.
  • Integrate real-time system data to keep interfaces fast and responsive.
  • Participate in peer reviews, testing, and documentation.
  • Adapt APIs and libraries to extend UI capabilities.
  • Conduct cross-functional field testing with hardware and software teams.
