Job summary

Smith Nephew is seeking a Robotics Engineer, AI Applications & Engineering Productivity, to advance the CORI robotic surgery platform with AI-powered features. You will develop AI capabilities across robotics, software engineering, and cloud services, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful patient outcomes.

The role requires ML, generative AI, CV experience, and strong Python/C programming, with a focus on scalable, production-grade software and secure, compliant

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, AI, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field, or a Bachelor’s with 5 years of industry experience.
• Strong programming skills in Python and/or C with production quality software experience.
• Hands-on experience with Generative AI, ML, LLMs, AI agents, or related tech.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and deploy AI features for the CORI robotic surgery platform.
• Apply ML, gen AI, CV, and data-driven techniques to enhance product functionality and UX.
• Develop software services, APIs, and workflows integrating AI into products and engineering tools.
• Support prototyping, evaluation, deployment, and continuous improvement of AI solutions.
• Implement AI development tools to boost engineering efficiency (Cursor, GitLab Duo, Copilot).
• Build automation and tooling to improve code quality, testing, and documentation workflows.
• Collaborate on software architecture, system integration, reviews, and CI/CD across robotics and cloud systems.
• Ensure AI solutions meet cybersecurity, privacy, quality, and regulatory requirements.

What will you be doing?

• Design, develop, test, and deploy AI powered features for the CORI robotic surgery platform.
• Apply machine learning, generative AI, computer vision, and data driven techniques to enhance product functionality and user experience.
• Develop software services, APIs, and workflows that integrate AI capabilities into existing products and engineering applications.
• Support the prototyping, evaluation, deployment, and continuous improvement of AI solutions.
• Implement and support AI assisted development tools such as Cursor, GitLab Duo, Copilot, and related technologies to improve engineering efficiency.
• Build automation and tooling that improve code quality, testing, documentation, traceability, and software development workflows.
• Collaborate on software architecture, system integration, code reviews, and CI/CD initiatives across robotic software and cloud-based systems.
• Ensure AI enabled solutions align with cybersecurity, privacy, quality, and regulatory requirements.

What will you need to be successful?

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or a Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of industry experience.
• Strong programming skills in Python and/or C with experience developing production quality software applications.
• Hands on experience with Generative AI, machine learning, large language models, AI agents, or related technologies.
• Knowledge of software development lifecycle processes, Agile methodologies, and modern software engineering practices.
• Strong analytical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Preferred experience with Azure OpenAI, cloud AI platforms, DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, robotics, healthcare technologies, or regulated software environments.
