Job summary

Magna Powertrain in Sterling Heights, MI, is seeking an experienced automation engineer to design, develop, and supervise plant automation and robotics systems. You will implement, test, and optimize automated hardware across production lines.

Responsibilities include programming robots (ABB/ Fanuc), integrating sensors and vision, troubleshooting hardware and software, and coordinating with engineering, manufacturing, quality and operations to ensure safe, reliable systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field and 5+ years in automotive manufacturing.
  • Strong knowledge of PLCs (Allen Bradley and Siemens).
  • Knowledge of robotics (ABB and Fanuc) preferred.
  • HMI programming experience including RS Logic, FTView, and Siemens Suite.
  • Experience with Ethernet/IP, DH+, RIO, DeviceNet, ControlNet, RS232 and electrical schematics.

Dream big and create the future of mobility at Magna Powertrain.Job Responsibilities:Objective:Responsible for designing, developing, and supervising all aspects of the plant automation & robotics systems, equipment, and machinery.ScopeWorks with internal and external resources to understand all requirements to ensure all project needs are met. Develops suggestions for improvements, assembles cost and timing information for projects. Implements changes and improvement following the change management system. Develops/supports TPM processes for equipment and instructions to maintain on a frequency schedule. The scope of equipment includes Robots, AGV’s, assembly equipment.Key Responsibilities:Design and develop robotic systems, equipment, and automated machinery.Program and configure robots using appropriate programming languages and control systems.Develop and test robotic software, algorithms, and applications.Integrate sensors, vision systems, and control technologies into robotic platforms.Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and operational issues.Conduct performance testing and analyze system efficiency and reliability.Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineering, manufacturing, quality, and operations.Create technical documentation, specifications, and user manuals.Ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.Support installation, commissioning, maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives.Participates in continuous improvement activities, submits improvement suggestions (CI, Safety).Ensure that company policies and procedures are adhered to including TS16949, ISO14001 (EMS), and Employee Handbook.Follows MIOSHA and MPTSH safety regulations and policies, including wearing required P.P.E. (Personal Protective Equipment). Reports unsafe conditions to Supervisor/Leader.Education and/or Experience:Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology certification or 5 plus years of equivalent experience and education. Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the automotive manufacturing environment. Must have strong knowledge of PLC’s (Allen Bradley and Siemens). Knowledge of robotics (ABB and Fanuc) preferred. Experience of HMI programming including but not limited to: RS Logic Suite, FTView, and Siemens Programming Suite required. Must have knowledge of various networks such as Ethernet/IP, DH+, RIO, DeviceNet, ControlNet, and RS232. Must be able to interpret and design electrical schematics. Must be continuous improvement minded and must understand the “7 wastes” to write effective programs. Must have ability to multitask. Must be adaptable, striving to find creative solutions to problems as they arise.
