Job summary

CPG Sorting Technologies, part of CP Group, is seeking a Robotics Engineer to design, test, deploy, and improve autonomous robotic systems for the Material Recovery Facility industry. This on-site, full-time role is based in the San Diego area and requires ownership from concept to deployment.

You will work with ROS2, C++, Python, SLAM, localization, and sensor integration, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, safe automation solutions and robust documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in robotics, software engineering, EE, CE, mechatronics, or related field.
  • Two years minimum developing robotics or autonomous systems.
  • Proficiency with ROS2, C++, and Python.
  • Knowledge of SLAM, localization, path planning, motion control, machine vision, and sensor integration.
  • Experience with embedded software/firmware.
  • Experience with modern version-control practices.
  • Strong engineering judgment, attention to detail, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to travel periodically for testing, commissioning, and field support.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, integrate, and maintain robotic software and control systems for autonomous industrial equipment.
  • Develop navigation, localization, SLAM, motion-planning, motion-control, and machine-vision algorithms.
  • Develop and optimize software using ROS2, C++, Python, and related development tools.
  • Integrate LiDAR, cameras, IMUs, GPS, industrial sensors, embedded systems, and NVIDIA or comparable computing platforms.
  • Support hardware and software interfaces, simulation, containerized deployment, and system diagnostics.
  • Collaborate with Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Manufacturing, and R&D teams.
  • Participate in concept development, prototyping, validation, FAT, deployment, commissioning, and continuous improvement.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues during development and field installations.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, backups, and deployment procedures.
  • Research and recommend technologies that improve performance, reliability, safety, and maintainability.
  • Recommend improvements to platforms, sensors, algorithms, and deployment processes.
  • Stop or elevate testing and deployment activities when safety or integrity may be at risk.

Role Description

The Robotics Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in the San Diego Area. This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who enjoys developing autonomous systems, solving complex technical challenges, and taking ownership of projects from concept through deployment. The Robotics Engineer will design, test, deploy, and continuously improve advanced robotic automation systems for the Material Recovery Facility industry.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, integrate, and maintain robotic software and control systems for autonomous industrial equipment
  • Develop navigation, localization, SLAM, motion-planning, motion-control, and machine-vision algorithms
  • Develop and optimize software using ROS2, C++, Python, and related development tools
  • Integrate LiDAR, cameras, IMUs, GPS, industrial sensors, embedded systems, and NVIDIA or comparable computing platforms
  • Support hardware and software interfaces, simulation, containerized deployment, and system diagnostics

  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues during development and field installations
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, software backups, and deployment procedures
  • Research and recommend technologies that improve system performance, reliability, safety, and maintainability
  • Recommend improvements to platforms, sensors, algorithms, and deployment processes
  • Stop or elevate testing and deployment activities when safety or system integrity may be at risk
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum of two years of experience developing robotics or autonomous systems
  • Strong proficiency with ROS2, C++, and Python
  • Knowledge of SLAM, localization, path planning, motion control, machine vision, and sensor integration
  • Experience with embedded software or firmware
  • Experience with modern version-control practices
  • Strong engineering judgment, attention to detail, and technical documentation skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to travel periodically for testing, commissioning, and field support
Preferred
  • Experience with Docker, NVIDIA platforms, Git, and Agile development
  • Experience with industrial automation or autonomous mobile robots
  • Experience supporting robotic systems from initial concept through field deployment
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, video conference, and electronic communications.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods while performing computer-based work.
  • Ability to occasionally move throughout the office to attend meetings and collaborate with team members.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry items up to 10 pounds.
Pay Range
  • $110,000–$120,000 annually, depending on qualifications, skills, and relevant experience.

Additional Information
Work Schedule: Full-time, on-site. Regular in-office collaboration is required.
Travel: Periodic domestic and international travel for testing, commissioning, and field support
Reports To: Electrical Department Manager
Pay: $110,000–$120,000 per year, depending on experience
